Play couldn’t have been closer between Matt Bernstein and Tony DeCaro in the Championship Flight. After nine holes, the two were tied at 37. DeCaro took a three-stroke lead heading into the 14th until back-to-back birdies, which forced a tie. Bernstein overcame one stroke on the 18th to force a playoff, 74-74, which he won.
Joey Alfonso had a strong performance Saturday. He used four birdies and 10 pars for a 2-over-par round and the victory in the A Flight. Andres Lopez, of the Hilton Head-Savannah Tour, also had four birdies, en route to a second place finish (76). Steven Ingwersen rounded out the top-3 with a 78.
The B Flight also saw a playoff hole. Al Sheppard and JG Hill were knotted up at 79 after 18 holes. Sheppard, who came out victorious made two birdies. Hill recorded four birdies on the round. Deon Cook finished a stroke ahead of James Speece, 80-81, for third.
Willie Reichling held a lead after nine holes and made the shots down the stretch to take the win in the C Flight. Reichling carded an 83 while Taylor Trapani used an 85 for second. Paul Turner and Steve Gwinn finished in a two-way tie for third (89) while Walter Jackson was only one stroke behind the duo.
Achasta saw its third playoff hole of the tournament in the D Flight. Chris Coleman and Junior Tunnell were knotted up at 39 after nine holes. Three lead changes later, the two were heading to a playoff, 94-94, in which Coleman won. Randy Ross placed third (95) while Steve Taylor carded a 97, good for fourth.
