High Temperatures Leads to High Scores.

On May 5th the Hilton Head-Savannah Tour held its most recent tournament. Shipyard golf club played host to the 9th tournament of the year for the tour. The course was in great shape, the temperature was close to 90* and the humidity was sitting on the golfers all round long. With all those conditions in play, it made for a rough day for all the golfers in the field. Scores were really influenced by the heat and humidity.

The Championship flight was won in uncontested fashion by newcomer Greg Luther. Greg put together a rollercoaster round of 82 playing from the tips. Greg would go stretches playing lights out but then a few holes would pop up and put a big number on the card. Greg is very excited about playing on the tour and can’t wait to continue with the season.

The A flight consisted of four of the most competitive golfers on the tour. Jeff Jordan, Mike Peters, Russ Gamblin and John Cabaniss all took to the course in order to claim the top spot for the tournament. More importantly for these four golfers were the bragging rights that were on the line. At the end of the day it was Mike Peters standing tall as the winner of the A flight and the all-important bragging rights. Mike fired a round of 82 today to best Jeff and John (84’s) by two and Russ by (91) nine. It was a good win for Mike and he left with a nice big smile on his face.

The B flight saw the only player of the day break into the 70’s. Roger Clark was able to fire a very solid and consistent round to card a 79 in today’s tournament. Roger was very happy with his round and he should be. Breaking 80 on a day like Saturday is a very impressive accomplishment. Coming in second was Joe McDonie (84) and Doug Hudock (85) rounds out the top three.

The C flight saw just two players competing for the top spot. Keith Weaver and Tom Cobb spent the entire round battling back and forth for the top position. After the front nine Weaver was up by one but Cobb came storming back on the back nine to best Weaver by one. End of 18, the players were tied. On the first playoff hole both players hit decent drives and had wedges in their hands towards the green. Weaver missed pin high left while Cobb topped his approach into some thick grass. After a few more minutes, Weaver tapped in for bogey and the win.

The D flight saw the return of Todd Champitto to the tour. Todd was able to put together a consistent round and pull off a 14 stroke victory over the remaining D flighters proving that Todd was the man to beat in the D flight. Coming in second was Mathieu Roy while Sean Coughlin and JR Shultz finish tied for third.

Our next event will be at The Barony in Port Royal Plantation on May 19th. I hope to see everyone there.
