Timbergate Results 2012

Saturday, April 7, 2012

The green flag dropped on the 2012 Indy Tour Season with the GolfNow! Chicago Tournament at Timbergate Golf Course on Saturday, April 7.  The early summer weather in Indiana has done wonders for courses, helping produce plush fairways and healthy greens.  Timbergate was as green as course designer, Fuzzy Zoeller’s Green Jacket.

The season got started with new member Justin Briggs hitting the first shot of the 2012 season.  If Jason’s opening tee shot is any indication on how the Indy Tour is going to go in 2012 we are in REALLY good shape.  The ‘A’ Flight had 7 players score in the 70’s and birdies were all the rage as 11 Skins were won with birdies.  Only 4 holes did not yield a birdie in the ‘A’ Flight.  Dave Zeider was the early clubhouse leader, posting a 77.  Zeider got off to a slow start with a 41 on the front 9, but turned it on in the closing stretch making birdies on 16 and 17 on his was to an even par back 9.  Chris Vale and Kyle Masterson also matched Zeider’s score of 77.  Vale had the most consistent round shooting his 77 with no birdies.  Masterson on the other hand, had a little more excitement in his round being +5 after 4 holes.  Starting on the fifth hole Masterson settled in and played even par on the final 14 holes.  Justin Northrup and Justin Briggs also scored in the 70’s firing round of 78 and 79 respectively.  The ‘A’ flight came down to Matt Till and Nathan Allen.  Allen played on the Indy Tour in 2011 and Timbergate produced his highest score on Tour last year.  Till was playing in his first event on the Golfweek Amateur Tour, but played like a veteran, scoring 2 birdies and posting a round of 76.  However, Allen got redemption on Timbergate this time around.  Allen started his day with birdies on holes 1 and 2.  Allen made his final birdie of the day on the par 5 sixteenth giving him a 1 shot victory over Till.  Zeider placed 3rd beating out Vale and Masterson on a scorecard playoff.

Tour rookies walked away with wins in flights ‘B’, ‘C’, & ‘D’.  Chris Nold and Tony Witt, both Tour veterans challenged Tour rookie Max Pipes for the ‘B’ flight championship.  Nold and Witt trailed Pipes by 2 after the front 9, but Pipes found a way to hold onto his lead and shoot 80 to win the ‘B’ Flight.

Mike Labanz won the ‘C’ flight with a steady round of 85.  Labanz finished the front 9 with a two shot lead over Doug Kea and a three shot lead over AJ Work.  After the 11th hole, Kea and Labanz were tied and Work trailed by only one.  Labanz made a par of the par 4, twelfth to take the lead for good.  Kea held off Work by one shot for second place.

Phil Rossman and Jason Leonard did battle all day in the ‘D’ flight.  Rossman was playing in his first Golfweek Amateur Tour event while Leonard is a veteran on the Chicago Tour.  At the completion of the 10th hole the two players were tied. Rossman made a par of the par 3 eleventh and then made birdie on the par 4 twelfth to give him the lead.  Rossman shot 98 to win the ‘D’ flight.

Kyle Masterson won the Closest to the Flagstick on Hole #8 for the (A & B Flights).

Phil Rossman won the Closest to the Flagstick on Hole #11 for the (C & D Flights)

Thank you to Timbergate Golf Course for hosting the Golfweek Amateur Tour.  General Manager Wayne Gibbs and Head PGA Professional Kurt Balser were fantastic to work and provided great hospitality.  Thank you!
