2012 GOLFWEEK
PRE-SEASON  TOURNAMENT #2
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18
MID-PINES RESORT

-----

Sign-up now to play Mid-Pines on February 18 with a 10 AM shotgun start time.   Similar to The Legacy, this event should sell out.  Only 40% of spaces remain.  Don't be left out.

------Mid-Pines Inn & Golf Club------

Mid Pines is a Special and Rare Golf Club.

It has 18 holes that are in exactly the same positions with the same numbers as when the course opened in 1921.

Many people have characterized the course as “pure Donald Ross” because of how it fits the land where it was built. It has few forced carries or artificial or contrived holes. Says Lee Pace, writing about the course in Pinehurst magazine: “Mid Pines was never conceived as a daunting task to the finest players competing under championship conditions … Mid Pines was intended simply as a fun course with adequate challenge for members and guests of a private club and resort.”

Even so, this course does play home to many national competitions including the 2002 USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship.

You're going to find hillier terrain on this course than Pine Needles; Mid Pines is also slightly shorter.

The par-3s are among the most popular holes on this course, and perhaps the most photographed hole on the course, according to Graham Gilmore Director of Golf at both Mid Pines and Pine Needles, is the par-3 No.2. You'll need an uphill shot from elevated tee boxes to an elevated green that makes for a tough target to hit. There's a distance of 178 yards from the back tees.

All Flights should expect to shoot and score well.

To reserve your place and to sign-up, please reply to this email, sign-up on-line or call Bruce Hallenbeck.

Again, this is a pre-season event for both the Golfweek and Senior Tours  - as such no points will be awarded, but similar to The Legacy Tournament, there should be a sell-out and a huge prize pool.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #124 Larry has hit his drive into the rough.  After about three minutes of searching he finds a ball but it is barely visible as the rough is, well, rough and overgrown.  He makes a practice stroke about a foot away from where the ball lies.  Unseen by Larry, there was another ball hidden in the grass which he hit with his practice stroke.  Surprised, he decides to verify the ball he intends to hit is his and he briefly lifts the original ball to check.  Indeed, the first ball found is his.  He replaces the ball and he hits it onto the fairway and takes three more strokes to complete the play of the hole. Decide true or false for the following statements: 1. Larry made five on the hole. 2. In match play, Larry would have lost the hole because he hit a wrong ball out of the rough. 3. Larry made six on the hole. 4. In stroke play, Larry would have made eight on the hole.

Answers 1. FALSE (see answers 2 & 3).   2. FALSE.  There is no penalty when Larry hit the hidden ball in the rough.  Briefly, the Definition of a stroke states that it is the forward movement of the club with the intention of striking at and moving a ball.  Larry had no "intention" of making a stroke at this hidden ball.  Thus, he did not breach Rule 15-3 as he did not make a stroke at a wrong ball.  See, the Rules are not always out to get you.   3. TRUE.  Larry lifted his ball for identification, but did so improperly.  A very specific procedure for identifying one's ball is detailed in Rule 12-2.  For failing to properly follow the procedure, Larry is penalized one stroke.  Larry hit his ball five times + a 1-stroke penalty = six.   4. FALSE (see answers 2 & 3).

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.

EcoloBlue - produces Atmospheric Water Generators that produce pure water from the humidity in the air. Incredible product and has optional solar panels.  I am sure even the engineers would appreciate this one.
