WHISPERING PINES

Hole #14, Par 3- Over Water to a Small Green

Country Club of Whispering Pines

A Semi-Private, Privately-Owned Country Club

In 1959, Ellis Maples was contracted by a group of private individuals to build them two golf courses. What he created through the whispering pines of the Carolina Sandhills has stood the test of time and represents some of his best work.

This semi-private, privately-owned Country Club boasts two championship golf courses rated among the best in the Carolinas. Just a short ride north of Pinehurst Village, Carthage, and Southern Pines, the Village of Whispering Pines is exactly what its name indicates - a quiet retreat from life's hustle and hum. The pines really do whisper in the breezes of the Carolina Sandhills. These courses can be a delight for those seeking a peaceful vacation.

You will be playing The West Course (formerly the River Course).  It has Bermuda fairways and Pencross bent grass greens. The West Course is a par 71 and plays from the tips at 6570 yards. But don't let the yardage fool you - the West Course's former designation as the River Course means that you must keep the ball dry. This is not always an easy proposition where half the holes have water hazards near landing areas.

Whispering Pines has a driving range, a practice pitching green complete with sand bunkers, and two putting greens, so early and work on fine tuning your short game before the tournament.

BREAK 100 - WIN A TOURNAMENT!

Pinewood Tournament Winners- (L to R):
D Flight - Jeff Jackson, Championship Flight - James Prasse

Asheboro, NC

(April 14, 2012)

Jeff Jackson of Randleman has only been playing golf for about a year. When he joined the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour the farthest thing from his mind was winning an event. By shooting 99 on the lightning-fast greens of Pinewood Country Club, he emerged victorious in the D Flight competition. "Winning was not my primary goal in joining the Tour" said Jackson.

"Improving was. I didn't expect to win today. But it was nice".

"Jeff has gotten better with each event he's played in", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "With our D Flight becoming larger and attracting a sizable field with bigger prizes as the season progresses, we hope to get more higher handicap players to come out and enjoy the 'Tour' experience.

If you want to play with Jeff, you might have to hurry, because his goal is to move up to C Flight competition as soon as possible".

Four other flights were contested as well in the event. In the Championship Flight Fayetteville's James Prasse broke through for his first Tour win with a 75. The Champ Flight boys hit from tee boxes that were about 400 yards longer than the rest of the field. That helps explain why Mike Crawford's 74 to win the A Flight was a shot lower than Prasse's total.

Pinewood Tournament Winners- (L to R):
A Flight - Mike Crawford; B Flight - Al Reams; C Flight - Darrell Smith

This was definitely a day for 1st-time winners as both the B and C Flights also crowned champions for their initial Tour wins. Raleigh's Al Reams shot a 78 to top the B Flight by one stroke over Greensboro's Mike Turbeville, while Darrell Smith of Julian enjoyed that same margin of victory over two players in the C Flight: High Point's Jason Stutts and Winston-Salem's Brad Smith.

Next week the Tour heads towards Pinehurst with an event at The Country Club of Whispering Pines. Any amateur golfer interested in playing in that event can contact Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or by emailing him at behgolf@aol.com .

How to beat a [very] BAD economy

If you are tired of dealing with the current state of the
economy, here's something you should know:

The surest path to success isn't in learning how to navigate through a terrible economy. The smarter path is to discover how you can "create your OWN economy..." where YOU make the rules!

There IS an alternative.

And this
new video reveals what that is.

Now I have to warn you, at the end of this video is an odd twist unlike anything you've probably seen before.

If you do nothing else today, be sure you watch through to the end.

It's clear that this guy in the video is on a mission. And
from his previous record of successes, it seems like he is
pretty much unstoppable.

Watch the video here.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #140

Concerning removing a ball from play because it is unfit for play (R5-3), select the correct statements:

1. If my ball is visibly cut or cracked or no longer round, I may take it out of play during the play of a hole.

2. My ball hit the cart path on the fly and now has a visible scrape of the surface of the ball that has roughed up and discolored the finish. I am allowed to take it out of play during the play of a hole.

3. My ball has hit the 150 yard marker on the fly and has a nickel-sized paint mark on it. I am allowed to take it out of play during the play of a hole.

4.I may always remove and replace with a different ball once my ball is on the putting green.

Answer

Rule 5-3 has very specific language. In part, R5-3 reads:

A ball is unfit for play if it is visibly cut, cracked or out of shape. A ball is not unfit for play solely because mud or other materials adhere to it, its surface is scratched or scraped or its paint is damaged or discolored.

Answer 1 is the only correct answer.

The modern golf ball is very hard to damage with a golf club or by contact with trees, cart paths or other solid objects. In recent years the only time I can recall an incident where Rule 5-3 applied concerned a ball that was hit from the tee then subsequently run over by a mower cutting the rough.

The rotary action of a mower blade sliced a small cap off the ball. There are two penalties associated with Rule 5-3. If you fail to follow the procedure for lifting and examining a ball for suspected damage or if you lift a ball without sufficient reason the player is penalized one stroke.

If you substitute a ball during the play of a hole when not permitted by the Rules, it is loss-of-hole penalty in match play or two strokes in stroke play.

Playing the hole with one ball, then putting with another is never permitted.

Tour Weather Guidelines:

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
