2012 GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
SATURDAY, MAY 12
BENTWINDS COUNTRY CLUB

-----

Bentwinds - Secures its Place As one of Top Playing Private Courses in the Triangle.

Bentwinds Country Club was designed and shaped through farm lands and tall pines and oaks.

Recently renovated, Kris Spence took what was a great base to make Bentwinds one of Central North Carolina’s finest golf courses. Strategic bunker placement and wonderfully defined tiff sport bermudagrass fairways creates challenging shot angles to the A-1 A-4 bentgrass greens.

Tour players will encounter narrow fairways, sloping greens, and a variety of hazards at Bentwinds.  Regardless of when you play Bentwinds finishing holes Nos 16, 17, and 18they could present difficult challenges that will require you to carefully place your tee shots and demand solid iron play to reach these well-protected greens.

Tour Members who have played here before, always makes this venue one of the courses they play during the season.  For you newbies, that means don't miss this gem.

To reserve your place and to sign-up, please reply to this email, sign-up on-line, call or mail a check to Bruce Hallenbeck.

HOLE IN ONE, 3-WAY PLAYOFF HIGHLIGHT GOLFWEEK TOUR EVENT

Winston-Salem, NC

May 5, 2012

Terry Evans of Apex stood on the tee box of the 138 yard, par 3, 3rd hole at The Meadowlands Golf Club with an 8-iron in his hands. "As soon as he hit it, you knew it was right at the hole", said one of his playing partners, Nick Slager. "Yeah", added Tom Vasseur, also in Evans' group, "I said be the right stick and it's in the hole". They were both right, as Evans' ball landed softly and disappeared into the cup for his first career "ace".

Unfortunately for Evans, the B Flighter came up just short of finishing "in the money", losing a scoreboard playoff for 4th place with an 82. That Master Card prize would have helped him defray the cost of the round of drinks he graciously provided for the Tour members helping him celebrate his good fortune.

Charlotte's Timothy Elliott topped the flight with a 76, while Vasseur came in 2nd with an 80.

Three A Flight members turned in 75s and headed back out on the course for a sudden death playoff. Tampa Florida's Jon Blum emerged the winner with a birdie on the 2nd playoff hole to close out Brian Carden and Billy Lankford, both of Kernersville.

"Solid playing from all 3 guys", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "I was particularly impressed with Brian Carden's effort, due to the fact he was recently promoted from the B Flight. He showed he can run with the big dogs".

Speaking of the "Big dogs", James Moore of Greensboro fired an even-par 72 from the back tees to give himself a 4-stroke cushion over Kernersville's Ross Cashion and Greensboro's Sean Pardue in the Championship Flight. As always, they were the only flight to go from "the Tips".

Julian's Darrell Smith topped the C Flight competition with an 87, 1 stroke clear of Harold Williams, and 2 better than Jason Stutts, both from High Point.

Greg Dotson of Raven, VA won D Flight honors with a 95. Jamestown's Brandon Andrews, Randleman's Jeff Jackson, and Greensboro's Keith Thomas all carded 98s.

The Golfweek Tour is heading East next week to Fuquay-Varina to play the private Bentwinds Country Club. There are spots available for that event. Interested in playing? Call Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or email him at behgolf@aol.com.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Questions from week #144

In a stroke play event, Megan has hit her ball onto a steep grass bank that borders a bunker. She approaches her ball with two clubs in her hand. After selecting one of the clubs for her upcoming stroke, she lays the other club beside her.

Before she can address the ball, it moves, rolls down the bank and is stopped by her unused club. She lifts her club and the ball continues to roll down and comes to rest in the bunker.

How should Megan proceed?

A. Megan must replace the ball on it's original spot, and is penalized two strokes.

B. Megan must place the ball on the spot where it came to rest against her unused club and is penalized one stroke.

C. Megan must play the ball as it lies in the bunker and is not penalized.

D. Megan must play the ball as it lies in the bunker and is penalized one stroke.

E. Megan must play the ball from where it came to rest against her club and is penalized two strokes.

Answer

Answer B is correct.

Megan is penalized one stroke, but if she doesn't proceed correctly, will pick up additional penalty strokes. Because Meagan had not addressed her ball, she is not deemed to be the cause for her ball moving, thus must play the ball where it comes to rest. However, because her ball came to rest when it was stopped by her equipment she is deemed to have breached Rule 19-2, Ball in Motion Stopped by Player's Equipment. Accordingly, the player is penalized one stroke and must play the ball as it lies where it came to rest against her club.

We still have the ball, at rest, against her other club to deal with. The removal of the club results in the ball moving a second time and this is a breach of Rule 18-2a (Ball at Rest Moved by Player). However, because it is a related act, clearly a result of the breach of R 19-2, a second 1-stroke penalty would not apply. She only is penalized the one stroke. (A single penalty for related acts is covered by Decision 1-4/12, Principle 4.)

Playing her ball from any spot other than where it came to rest against her unused club would result in playing from a wrong place and because this is stroke play, she would pick up a second penalty of two strokes for a total of three. (R19-2, one stroke penalty; and the general penalty from R18).

Tour Weather Guidelines:

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
