2013 GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
FEBRUARY 16, 2013
2013 PRE-SEASON TOURNAMENT II
LONGLEAF COUNTRY CLUB

-----

Longleaf Golf and Country Club

The second Pre-Season Tournament of the 2013 Amateur and Senior Golf Season will be held at Longleaf Country Club.

Third generation golf course architect Dan Maples, brought his talent to Southern Pines with Longleaf Golf & Country Club. Built on the site of one of the Village of Pinehurst's former horse training estates, Longleaf shines.. Many of the original features -- the white fences, rail post and hedgerows -- have been carefully retained as a tribute to the original site.

170 acres of the Club at Longleaf development were sold to Dan Maples, golf course architect, with the provision that he build and operate a golf course, including a clubhouse, driving range, tennis courts, swimming pool, and a pool house. Work in the 6600 yard 18 hole design began in February 1988 and its grand opening was held on November 4th of that year. The golf shop and cart storage were temporarily housed in the Tate horse barn until the present clubhouse was finished in early 1990. (Historical information provided by Jean Walker, longtime Longleaf member)

A 1974 photograph of Starland Farm shows a one-mile long track, which was built on a former steeplechase track, and a three-quarter mile turf race course with a show ring in the in the center. Today, some of the hedge and water jumps can still be seen on the #1 and #8 fairways and the #9 back tee. Portions of the Starland Farm track fence serve as a backdrop for the front nine holes.

This is a pre-season event to which both the Golfweek and Senior Tours. Because of that mix, no points will be awarded, but the prize pool is generally one of the largest of the season.

Historically this event sells out, so if you have interest in playing, you know the drill.

"Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold"

Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!

Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.

  • It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)

  • It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).

  • It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

GOLFWEEK AND SENIOR AMATEUR TOURS "KICK-OFF" 2013 SEASON

Aberdeen, NC

February 2, 2013

While early morning temperatures lingered in the teens, conditions improved in the afternoon to allow a large field of Tour members to complete their first competitive round of golf in 2013 on the Golfweek and Senior Amateur Golf Tours today at The Legacy Golf Links. B Flight winner James Dockery, a long-standing Tour veteran, stated "Once we got going conditions were OK".

While the temperatures were reasonable to play in, they did contribute to the higher scores that were posted in each flight. All you had to do to be "in the money" in the Championship flight was break 80, in the D Flight, break 100. No golfer in the B Flight broke 80, and none in the C Flight broke 90.

Pre-Season Winners at Legacy (Left to Right)

B Flight - James Dockery, D Flight - Charlie Brodie;

Championship Flight - John East

Not Shown:: C Flight - Bill Wikinson

While scores were higher, it didn't stop 2 Tour members from hitting impressive shots. Wendell's Bob Dail eagled the the 347 yard, par 4, 10th hole with a 7-iron from 128 yards out. "The wind was directly in our face, so I used more club", stated Dail. Meanwhile, Greensboro's Coray Mitchell used an 8-iron with the wind at his back from 145 yards to produce the same result - an eagle 2 - on the 375 yard, par 4, 1st hole.

Pre-Season Winner at Legacy: A Flight: Jay Yergeau

Rockingham's John East took top honors in the Championship Flight with a 73. The A Flight belonged to Godwin's Jay Yergeau. As mentioned earlier, Southern Pines' James Dockery won the B Flight, while Bill Wilkinson was victorious in "C". Tour newcomer Charlie Brady of Oxford won his first Tour start as a D Flight member.

The regular season starts on March 7 for the Seniors at Bryan Park, while the Golfweek Tour gets things going at the Challenge on March 2. There will be one more preseason event held for both Tours at Longleaf on February 16. Openings are available for that event.

Any amateur golfer interested in joining either Tour can contact Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or by emailing him at behgolf@aol.com.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Questions from week #184 Ten questions on where is your ball: 1. You find your ball up against and touching a brick wall that, according to the Local Rules, defines out of bounds. Is your ball in or out of bounds? 2. You find your ball up against and touching the fairway side of a red stake. Is your ball in or out of the lateral water hazard? 3. You find your ball touching both the rough and the sand in a bunker. Is your ball in the rough or in the bunker? 4. Your ball is touching both the fringe and the putting green. Is your ball on or off the green? 5. Your ball, as teed, is about half forward of the teeing ground as defined by the leading edge of the tee markers. Is your ball within or outside the teeing ground? 6. Your ball has come to rest touching the outside edge of a painted line that marks ground under repair. Is your ball in or outside the GUR? 7. Your ball has come to rest in the middle of a bridge, elevated over a water hazard. Is your ball in or outside the hazard? 8. Your ball has come to rest in a bush that grows from within an area of ground under repair, but the ball is physically located outside the margins of the GUR. Is your ball considered in or out of the GUR? 9. Your ball has come to rest just off a wrong putting green, but your stance for your next stroke would be on the wrong putting green. Is your ball considered on or off a wrong putting green for the purpose of applying Rule 25-3? 10. You find your ball in thick grass that clearly overhangs a bunker suspended above the sand. Is your ball in or out of the bunker?

Answers 1. IN bounds. 2. IN the lateral water hazard. 3. IN the bunker. 4. ON the putting green. 5. WithIN the teeing ground. 6. IN the GUR. 7. IN the water hazard. 8. IN the GUR 9. OFF the putting green. 10. OUT of the bunker. A couple of points:
  • Nearly all conditions and features of a golf course are comprised of a closed loop. This is true for the course (closed loop defined by OB stakes), all hazards (water and bunkers), areas of GUR or casual water, teeing grounds, putting greens, dropping zones, etc. If your ball is touching the loop that defines the condition, then it is IN or ON that condition.
  • Do not think of the fairway as a condition that is closed, if you look closely enough, you find in nearly every case it is not. However, when your ball touches both the fairway and the first cut of rough, it is deemed in the fairway. If the margin of the fairway coincides with the margin of another “loop”, such as putting green, hazard or teeing ground, then that other feature determines the position of the ball.
  • There is a hierarchy that ranks the loops with OB on top. In a descending order, OB is followed by water hazards, then Abnormal Ground conditions, then bunkers. This means, for example, if your ball is in a bunker but also touches a red painted line that defines an adjacent lateral water hazard, your ball is in the lateral water hazard.
  • #7, the margins of a water hazard extends in the vertical dimension both up and down. So if your ball is suspended above but within the margins of the water hazard, it is IN the hazard (DEF: water hazard)
  • #8, anything growing (grass, bush tree) rooted within the area of GUR is considered part of the condition. However, the margins of GUR extend only downward but not upwards. So if your ball is suspended in a bush above and within the margins of the GUR but the bush is rooted outside the margin, you get no relief under this Rule. (DEF: Ground Under Repair
  • #9, it is the position of the ball only that determines whether or not a player must take relief for interference with a wrong putting green (R25-3). Unlike interference with Immoveable Obstructions (R24-2) or Abnormal Ground Conditions (R25-1), interference with a wrong putting green is ball position only with no regard to a players stance.
  • #10, the margins of a bunker, unlike its cousin the water hazard, do not extend vertically upwards, only downwards (same as GUR). Only OB and water hazards extend vertically up.

Tour Weather Guidelines:

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
