WINNERS POST SOLID SCORES IN COLD GOLFWEEK TOUR EVENT KICKOFF EVENT

Graham, NC

March 2, 2013

Sixty-One intrepid golfers showed up in near freezing weather conditions to contest the first regular season event on the 2013 Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour Raleigh and Triad Tours. While on average scores were higher, the top players in each flight didn't seem to mind the cold temperatures.

One of the most impressive scores of the tournament was turned in by Tour newcomer Chris Cox of Archdale who emerged victorious in his C Flight debut. His 87 made him the only flight member to break 90. James Eatmon of Sims was runner-up with a 95. Another Tour rookie, Oxford's Charlie Brodie, who earlier had won his Tour debut with a victory at this season's 1st pre-season event at The Legacy in Aberdeen, made it 2-in-a-row with a 92 for top honors in the D Flight. Zebulon's Greg Dauscher placed 2nd, only one stroke off the pace.

The other 3 Flights all saw Tour veterans rise to the occasion. Gibsonville's Neal Faulkner was 2-over par in the Championship flight for a comfortable 3 shot cushion over Mark Macejko of Vass who shot 77.

Corey Mitchell of Greensboro shot 75 and enjoyed a 2 shot margin in the A Flight competition over 14 year old Grant Powell of Colfax, who also was competing in his debut event. "We've had some really good youngsters compete 'on-Tour' with us in the past" stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Some of them have gone on to star in college and beyond. I expect to see a lot from Grant in the future".

Jimmy Adams of Greenville stood alone atop the B Flight standings with an 81, 2 strokes better than Oxford's Jeffery Silver.

The next Golfweek Tour event will be held at Bryan Park (Players) next Saturday, March 9th. Any amateur golfer interested in competing "on-Tour" this season can contact Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or by emailing him at behgolf@aol.com. Tour memberships are available.

"Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold"

Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!

Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.

  • It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)

  • It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).

  • It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

"When you have a chance to shoot the lowest score of your life you won't choke - You Will Go Low!"

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Questions from week #188

Concerning Ground Under Repair, select the True statements:

A.. In the absence of a representative of the Committee in a stroke play event, provided the fellow competitors concur, a player may declare ground under repair for the purposes of taking relief from a part of the course that is unmarked but obviously damaged and in need of repair.

B. Material piled for removal must be marked by the Committee in order for the player to obtain relief under Rule 25-1; otherwise, if it is not so marked, the player should play two balls and let the Committee rule.

C. A player whose ball lies just outside of an area marked as ground under repair has inference with his swing from a tree that is rooted partially inside the marked area. The player is entitled to relief under R25-1.

D. My ball has come to rest in the fairway on turf that has been damaged by deer. This is ground under repair and I am entitled to free relief under R25-1.

Answers

A. False. Only a member of the Committee or an authorized representative can mark or declare a part of the course as ground under repair (see Def: Ground Under Repair.) In stroke play, when in doubt, play two balls and report to the Committee before turning in the score card.

B. False. The Definition of Ground Under Repair states that material piled for removal and a hole made by a greenkeeper, even if not so marked, is GUR.

C. True. The margins of GUR go downward but not upwards. This means that relief from a tree rooted in an area of GUR would include the branches if they over hang the margins but not any roots that extend beyond the margins.

D. False. Depending upon the extent of the damage, the area might be so declared by the Committee if they were to become aware, but for the purposes of applying the criteria for relief under R25-1, this is neither an abnormal ground condition nor GUR. Deer are not considered burrowing animals (see Def: Burrowing Animal.)

Tour Weather Guidelines:

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
