2013 GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
APRIL 13, 2013
Sapona Country Club
-----
Sapona Country Club

Sapona CC was established and designed by Ellis Maples in 1967 and is set amid the hardwood forests of the Piedmont Triad.

Most of you know that the Maples family has a storied golf past dating back to the original courses in Pinehurst and their classic design principles can be seen throughout the Sapona’s golf experience.

Ellis Maples’s creative work and shotmaker's design will require you to have your course management 'A' game on in this week. You will need to think your way through every shot, exactly as golf was intended.

There are good scores to be had at Sapona but only if you know your distances, if your ball lands on the correct side of every green and you stay below the hole.

The course is always in excellent condition and host some of the most prestigious tournaments.

HIGH SCORES DOMINATE GOLFWEEK TOUR MAJOR

Holly Springs, NC

March 23 2013

The Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour provides flighted competition for amateur golfers across the country, maintaining a Tour handicap on all participants to assure that they are competing in the correct flight. If a Tour member in any flight other than Championship has that handicap rating go lower than the flight range, they are automatically moved to the better flight.

After Saturday's event at Devils Ridge Country Club (the season's 1st Major event) nobody had to go home worrying about receiving a flight promotion.

Scores were high across the board.

The best Championship round was turned in by High Point's Dan Holland with an even 80, one better than Zach Arms of Winston-Salem. The A Flight winner had to be determined by a card playoff after Greensboro's Coray Mitchell and Jackson Springs' Matt Daugherty finished with 77s and Mitchell prevailed in the playoff. Under normal conditions they would have gone back out on the course for a sudden-death playoff, but due to the fact that the course overbooked tee-times and play was slow, darkness prevented them returning to the course.

Devils Ridge Winners (L to R)

Championship Flight - Dan Holland; C Flight - Shirral Davis

In B Flight action Jim Mclean of Hillsborough edged Apex' Bob Sheahan 81 to 82.

Devils Rdige Winners (L to R)

B Flight - Jim McClean; A Flight - Coray Mitchell

C Flight - Greg Dausher (Photo not available)

Raleigh's Shirral Davis doubled that margin in the C Flight, finishing 2 ahead of Tour newcomer Paul Chanthaphone of Greensboro, who was playing in his first Tour event, and Tour veteran Landon Wilkes who has over 100 "Tour starts" under his belt.

One tour member broke 100 in the D Flight - Zebulon's Greg Dauscher. His 99 was the class of the field with 2nd place going to Fayetteville's Kurt Bryant with a 102.

Dauscher, like the other 4 flight winners today, assured himself of a spot in the season-ending National Finals in Hilton Head in October.by virtue of this victory in a Major event. Over 700 golfers from all over the country will compete in that tournament.

The Golfweek Amateur Tour will take the next two weeks off and resume play at Sapona Country Club in Lexington on April 13.

Please forward this newsletter to family or friends if they are interested in competing "on-Tour", by sending this to them or have them contact Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556.

"Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold"

Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!

Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.

  • It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)

  • It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).

  • It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

"When you have a chance to shoot the lowest score of your life you won't choke - You Will Go Low!"

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #192

Mike's chip from off the green has come to rest against the flagstick which was not quite centered in the hole.

Concerning this situation, which of the following statements are TRUE?

a.If Mike takes action to have the flagstick straightened or removed, if his ball moves he continues play of the hole with where it comes to rest, either in the cup (holed with his last stroke) or where it came to rest on the green if it rolled away from the hole.

b. Mike's opponent in a match, without first checking with Mike, removes the flagstick and the ball rolls away from the hole. Mike should place his ball on the lip of the hole and putt out.

c. Mike's opponent in a match, may lift Mike's ball, conceding Mike's next stroke.

d. Before anyone can remove the flagstick, another ball in motion strikes Mike's ball and it falls into the hole. Mike has holed out with his last stroke.

Answer

Rule 17-4 affords the player whose ball is at rest against a flagstick a specific right that over-rides several other Rules.

It specifically limits who can remove the flagstick to the player or someone he authorizes. If anyone other than the player or someone authorized by him moves the ball or removes the flagstick, the ball and/or flagstick must be replaced.

In stroke play there is no penalty.

In match play, if the opponent or the opponent”s caddie moved or removed the flagstick without permission, the opponent incurs a one stroke penalty under R18-3b.

a. Is False. If Mike's ball fall into the hole when the flagstick is straightened or removed, it is holed with his last stroke. But if it moves away from the hole it is not played where it comes to rest, but is to be placed on the lip of the hole.

b. Is False. Because of Mike's rights under this Rule, in a match, if Mike's opponent removes the flagstick and Mike's ball moves, the opponent is penalized one stroke under R18-3b for moving his opponents ball and the ball and flagstick are to be replaced. Mike may then remove the flagstick as prescribed in Rule 17-4. Even if Mike's ball fell into the hole when his opponent removed the flagstick, because it was unauthorized, the opponent would still be penalized and Mike would still have to replace the flagstick and ball and proceed under R17-4. (another beer bet nugget).

c. Is False. Again, Mike has rights that his opponent may not usurp by conceding a stroke before Mike has the opportunity to remove the flagstick himself. The opponent would again be penalized one stroke under R18-3b and the ball would be replaced.

d. Is False. Mike's ball would have to be replaced and Mike would then proceed under R17-4.

Tour Weather Guidelines:

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
