2-DAY GOLFWEEK TOUR LOCAL FINALS HELD AT BRYAN PARK

Brown Summit, NC

September 29, 2013

The Triad and Raleigh/Pinehurst Divisions of the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour dropped the curtain on the 2013 season this weekend with a 2-day Local Finals event at Bryan Park.

Playing the Players course on Saturday and the Champions course on Sunday, two players used to winning "on-Tour" padded their stats, while three players who have enjoyed success on Tour this season, but haven't really dominated, rose to the top of their flights for the weekend.

In the Championship Flight, a multiple winner "on-Tour" this year, Greensboro's Jared Jewett, continued his run of strong play by posting a 2-day total of 151 to top his group. Advance's Gene Queen was second, 2-strokes back.

15-year old Grant Powell of Colfax who dominated A Flight play for most of the season, won yet again with a 152 total. Chapel Hills' Henry Lister finished runner-up with a 155. "Grant has a real future in golf" stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Not only does he have game, but he's a well grounded kid".

Raeford's Marcus Dudley had a relatively easy go of it in the B Flight with a 161 that was 5 shots better than Bob Sheahan of Apex. Both finished with 82s on Sunday to secure their places.

Tour veteran Landon Wilkes of Apex blistered his C Flight competition on Saturday with an 82 that left his closest pursuers 7 shots behind. It was his lowest career score "on-Tour". Sunday he posted the 2nd best score in the flight, resulting in a comfortable 8 shot win over Zebulon's Greg Dauscher - 175 to 183.

David Flanagan of Clemmons also enjoyed a sizable lead after Saturday's play, cruising to an 8 shot win over Greensboro's Byron Talton in the D Flight. Flanagan's 2-day score totaled 184.

Next up for the Tour members who have qualified is the Golfweek National Tour Finals which will bring the top 700 + players from the 40 odd Tours around the country to Hilton Head on October 18th through the 20th.

"Improve your Golf Mental Toughness 10-fold"

Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!

Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.

  • It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)

  • It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).

  • It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Questions from week #219

The Definition for Wrong Ball states that a wrong ball is any ball other than the player’s: ball in play, provisional ball or a second ball played under the Rules (R3-3 or R20-7c). This would include: another player’s ball, an abandoned ball, or the player’s original ball when it is no longer in play.

Armed with that summary, decide which of the following examples would be deemed a wrong ball:

A. Andy finds his tee ball about a yard out of bounds (as defined by a line between two OB stakes) in an area that has been cut by the greenkeeper’s mower. Andy plays the ball from where it lies. Has Andy played a wrong ball?

B. Megan’s ball has come to rest in a greenside bunker next to Tony’s ball. Because Tony is to play first, Megan marks then lifts her ball and sets it aside out of Tony’s way. After Tony played his shot into the hole, a distracted Megan forgot to replace her ball and instead played from where she had set it aside. Has Megan played a wrong ball?

C. Brian and Ryan are opponents in a match and are sharing the same caddie, Larry. Once they are on the green, Brian and Ryan both mark, lift and toss their respective balls to Larry to clean. Larry returned a ball to each player. Brian was away, putted first and made his putt. That’s when Ryan discovers that Larry apparently switched the player’s balls when he returned them after cleaning as Ryan was holding Brian’s ball. Has Brian played a wrong ball?

D. Michael has hit his tee ball into an area where it could be lost. After everyone else tees off he properly plays a provisional ball. Since golf carts are restricted to the path, Michael comes upon his provisional first and to save time, plays a stroke towards the green even though this ball was clearly closer to the hole than where his original might be. After a brief search Michael finds his original ball and then plays this ball towards the green. Has Michael played a wrong ball?

Is Larry in BIG trouble?

Answers

A. Yes, Andy played a wrong ball. When a ball is out of bounds, it is no longer in play. Thus he played his original ball when it was out of play. In stroke play, Andy would be penalized two strokes and must return to the tee putting a ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance. The stroke made at the ball lying out of bounds does not count in Andy’s score. In match play, Andy lost the hole when he made a stroke at the ball lying out of bounds.

B. Yes, Megan has played a wrong ball. When a ball has been lifted, it is out of play. It matters not whether the player puts the ball in their pocket, holds in in their hand or sets it aside. When Megan played her ball from where it was set aside it cost her a two stroke penalty in stroke play and she must correct the error by placing a ball on the correct spot. In match play, she lost the hole when she made the stroke at her ball at its set-aside position.

C. No Brian has played an improperly substituted ball. When he placed the ball his caddie, Larry, gave to him he was intending to put a ball in play. Unfortunately, it was not the ball he started the play of the hole with and when he made his stroke with this other ball, it was a breach of R15-2, Substituted Ball. Brian lost the hole in match play. In stroke play, Brian’s stroke with the substituted ball counts for score and he must add a 2-stroke penalty. A couple of points: if the discovery was made before Brian made his stroke, he could replace the ball with the correct one. He would have to first mark the position of the wrongly substituted ball before lifting it, because, even though it is not his original ball, it is still in play. If you incorrectly substitute a ball, once you make a stroke at that ball, you would continue play of the hole with that ball as it is now your ball in play.

D. Yes, Michael has played a wrong ball. When Michael played his provisional ball, because it was played from a point nearer the hole than than where his original was likely to be, his provisional had become his ball in play (R27-2c). After finding his original ball, he should not have made a stroke at it as it was no longer his ball in play. He is penalized two strokes and must complete the play of the hole with his provisional ball. If Michael were to complete the play of the hole using his original ball, if left uncorrected, he would be disqualified in a stroke play event.

Larry was in big trouble and got no tip from Brian. Ryan, however, more than made up for it as Ryan won the match one up. Go figure.

Why do you need to know if you’ve played a wrong ball? In stroke play it is critical to recognize when you have played a wrong ball because it is a “must correct” breach. If you don’t correct the error, you will be DQed. Alternately, if you play an improperly substituted ball you would continue to complete the hole with the substituted ball. If you play from a wrong place, you need not correct the error except in the case of a serious breach.

Tour Weather Guidelines:

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
