Brad Landry wins with play-off!
Louisiana North Tour: Feb. 26th, Palmetto CC
Benton, LA – Close to 100 players made up the field for the first 2011 North LA Tour event at Palmetto CC with hilly landscapes and small fast greens. In the Championship flight, Brad Landry tied veteran member Glenn Roscoe with a 75. The sudden death play-off against the wind on Hole #1, a 400+ yard beast, revealed both fatigue and nerves from the duo. Brad sealed his victory with a bogey on the 1st play-off hole.
In the A flight, Palmetto member and North Tour veteran, Scott Diehl, won by one shot with a 77. Returning members, Tracy Goss and Paul Adkins tied for second place with 78’s. This is Paul’s second time in one week to hit the board.
In the B flight, after a two year break, returning member Gentry Mangun captured first with an 11 over 82. Three long-term members, Kent Willis, Chad Darnell, and Victor Page all tied with 83’s.
In the C flight, veteran member, Wayne North scorched the course with an 80, starting with a triple on the first hole. Returning member John Wilson and rookie member Vince Almond, both finished at 81. The Tour welcomes these players to the B flight.
Rick Tully in the D flight ended his season last year with a win at the State Final, and started 2011 right where he left off. Rick’s score of 91 was followed by Dave Taylor’s 92, with Tim Vining and Nat Briscoe tying for third with 94.
Rick Luzar wins by three at Mid Pines!
Raleigh/Pinehurst, NC Tour: Feb. 26th, Mid Pines Resort
Southern Pines, NC - Mid Pines did not disappoint any Tour players as they enjoyed a great old Donald Ross course. Pinehurst's Rick Luzar emerged as the "top dog" in the Championship Flight. Luzar shot a 1-over par 73 to edge out newcomer Lance Jordan by 3 strokes.
An eagle on the 481-yard 15th hole highlighted Luzar’s round. "On the back side it seemed like I either birdied or bogeyed just about every hole," stated Luzar.
The largest flight of the day was the A Flight with 41 participants out of a total field of 123. Ed Gregory of Cary, playing in his very first Tour event used his length to take the top spot with a 75. Greensboro's Robin Gomez, playing in his second year on Tour was only one shot back with a 76.
In the B flight, Joe Prairie of Asheboro fired a smooth 79, just 2 stokes clear of Roger Sullivan and Tom Handy. Prairie's 1-over par 37 on the back nine was the key to his victory. The C Flight saw Ben Martin enjoy a 6-stroke edge over his closest competitor, ending the day with an 81. Jack Frazier of Clemmons took second place with 87.
It was a good day for the Martin family, as Ben's son, Tyler Martin took first place in the D Flight with a 98. He finished a single stroke ahead of Raleigh's Bob Robinson who made his second runner-up finish in a row, having also taken second at The Legacy Golf Links.
