Louisiana North Tour– May 22, 2011, Black Bear GC

Delhi, LA - The mid-season two-day Major on LA’s North Tour lived up to the hype. The course with panoramic views and rolling terrain turned out to be a beast. At 7,200 yards, Black Bear tamed the Champ Flight, allowing only three players to shoot 77 on the first day. Jason Lewis bettered his score by carding a 76 on Sunday and capturing his first Major win on the Tour with a two day total of 153. Dan Willson fired a Sunday round of 76 to pass four other players en route to his highest finish for the season and a total of 157. Doyle Eznack finished 3rd with a 159, followed by Keith Breazeale’s 162, and Britt Guillory’s 163.

After the first day, the A flight was tied up with a pair of 80s from tour veterans: Mark Toloso and Paul Adkins. Sunday was moving day for 2nd-year member Tracy Goss who got red-hot and carded a 33 on the back nine to scorch the field with the low round for the weekend. Tracy finished with a two-day total of 155. Toloso shot a solid 1-over-par 37 on the front nine of the 2nd day, and then cooled off a bit on the back ending up with a total of 157. Point’s leader Scott Diehl woke up on Sunday and gained on the field with a strong 76, for a total of 163. Most consistent was Chris Cain with his one stroke differential between Saturday and Sunday, also carding a 163. Paul Adkins finished out the top five with his 165.

Nerves beset the final group on Sunday in the B flight as only two finished in the top five after all the scores came in. 1st-year member and 1st-time winner, Leamon Morgan, shaved nine shots off his 2nd round to capture the title of Mid-Season Champion with a total of 165.

Consistency paid off for veteran Jason Hedrick who tied for 2nd with his 171. Starting nine shots back on Sunday, Trey O’Neal never gave up. A 39 on his back nine earned Trey a tie for 2nd with a 171. Slagle McGuffee played consistent capturing 3rd place honors with a 172.

Bad breaks led to heartbreak on Sunday for 3rd year member Dan Hubbard who led the field by four shots after the first round. Hubbard managed a 5th-place finish, receiving a gift certificate for his two-day total of 176.

In the C flight, Adam Barr, a 1st-year member and 1st-time winner, played consistent, solid golf eclipsing the field by two shots. Mark Pendleton also had reason to be proud as his two-day total of 175 garnered him 2nd and 550 points. Tag Griffin, 1st-day leader, left a few shots out on the course, but still captured third with a 180 total. Gerard Rinchuso (181), Darrell Russell (183), and Nat Briscoe (183) all scratched and scraped to finish in the top five.

It was a great opportunity for the D flight field to take advantage of an event that the point’s leader couldn’t attend. Kevin Strickland did exactly that, but it wouldn’t have mattered anyway as he shot his career-low round on Sunday with an 83 and a total of 179. Chance Weeks played well capturing 2nd place with a 184. Travis Jore can be proud of his 191, guaranteeing 3rd place and 450 points. Tim Vining and Rodney Sharber tied for 4th place with 195, and a large chunk of the points.
