Cleghorn 2017 Recap

Contributed by Sean Naylor

The Upstate Tour impressed in its two-day event. Play was close in three of the five flights, including a 177, 178 and 179 final in the B Flight.

Shane Thompson had himself a weekend in the Championship Flight. He led the field after 18 holes with a 75. Two birdies and 11 pars later, Thompson carded an impressive 76 – en route to a first-place finish with a 151. Kris Laird, of the Charlotte Tour, carded a 154 for second while Phillip Dean, visiting us from Eastern North Carolina, took third (168).

James Earnhardt held a five-stroke lead as Saturday’s round concluded in the A Flight. His lead grew thanks to eight birdies on the final 18 holes. Earnhardt took the spot (161) while Adam Shealy placed second (172). Al Hyjek made two birdies in the final round which was the difference maker in taking third – two strokes ahead of Chris Lombardozzi who carded a 180.

After 18 holes of golf in the B Flight, Josh Calhoun and Joe Lee were tied at 88 apiece. On Sunday, the two battled back-and-forth. Three lead changes occurred before Lee made a birdie putt on the 12th hole to tie the score up at 146. One more tie occurred on the 15th (163-163) until Lee took the one-stroke lead a hole later. His lead held until the final hole of the tournament – Calhoun made a par which lifted him above Lee one last time (177-178). Cliff Sult, visiting from the Charlotte Tour, rounded out the top-3 with a 179.

Mitch Green developed a big enough cushion in the opening round to take the top spot in the C Flight. He shot an 86 and then a 95 on Sunday. Deno Contosplaced second (185) while Sheila Hadden Hinton carded a 192 between the two days.

A card of 97 on Sunday separated Greg Minton from the pack and earned him the win in the D Flight (195). Jeremy Wilson took second with a 204. Tim Schofield rounded out the top-3 with a 209.
