Furman 2017 Recap

Contributed by Sean Naylor
The
Golfweek Amateur Tour kicked off in the Upstate this past weekend and was
sponsored by the Cannon Can Do Cooler company. Be sure to check out the Cannon Single6 which each flight winner
received as an extra gift! The Furman event was close and fast with all
participants finishing the round in well under five hours! Play was tight
throughout as the top-2 finishers were separated by two or less strokes on the
round. Oh yeah, we also saw an EAGLE!
Thanks
to three birdies, Kris Laird held a
two-stroke lead after the opening nine holes. He added another on the 13th hole which gave him enough breathing room to take the top spot in the
Championship Flight with a card of 72. Greg
Harrold notched an eagle on the 2nd hole and two birdies of his
own for second place (74). Both Laird and Harrold are from the Charlotte Tour. Joseph Hollingsworth took third with a
score of 79 on the round.
Thomas Whitley, of the Atlanta Tour, got
off to a fast start in the A Flight. He birdied three of the opening four holes
and added another on the 8th. Heading into the back, Whitley held a
two-stroke lead over the closest opponent. He then pared four of the final nine
holes, en route to a 77 on the round – good for a first place finish. Ray Cruz notched a birdie and five pars
on the back to earn second with a card of 79. James Earnhardt knocked down three birdies and finished the round
in third place (80).
Two
holes were the difference in the B Flight. Chris
Franklin made a birdie on the 16th and 18th hole to
edge Mason Hagen by one stroke,
81-82, for the top spot. Franklin and Hagen were tied three times after the 13th hole. Russell Lamoy, who finished with an 83, took third place while Bob Santee and Kirk Tatge rounded out the top-5 in a two-way tie (83).
Deno Contos made a birdie on the 15th hole. With that putt, he and Trey Stacey
were knotted at 73 a piece with three holes left to play. Contos then took
a two-stroke lead on the 16th which was enough wiggle room to take
first (85) in the C Flight. Stacey finished second with a card of 87 while Karl Yergey, of the DC Metro Tour, rounded
out the top-3 (93). There was a two-way tie for fourth as Bob Russell and Mitch Green both shot 94 on the round.
Merle Sauvola took the top spot in the
D Flight with a 97. Ken Whitley edged Tim Schofield by one stroke,
99-100, for second.
