Deno Contos (C Flight) wins back-to-back tournaments!

Verdae Recap 2017

Contributed by Sean Naylor

A three-way playoff and an eagle highlighted the Upstate tour’s Verdae Greens event this past weekend.

Dalton Thompson made three birdies en route to the top spot in the Championship Flight. He outlasted Kris Laird, visiting from the Charlotte tour, by two strokes (76-78). Shane Thompson nailed an eagle on the 14th hole – he took third with a card of 81.

Upstate tour members Chris Lombardozzi and James Earnhardt trailed Thomas Chambers, of the Charlotte tour, by one stroke heading into the 18th hole of the A Flight. Lombardozzi and Earnhardt needed to at least birdie the hole to have an opportunity to force a playoff. The duo did just that – Chambers pared the hole for a three-way tie (82). The playoff took TWO holes but a winner was eventually crowned. Chambers earned the win while Lombardozzi placed second. Earnhardt rounded out the top-3.

Kyle Foxworth, visiting from the Columbia tour, birdied two holes and shot one-over-par on the back nine to cruise to a B Flight victory. He finished with an 81 on the day. Joe Lee placed second (91) while Robert Luter and Larry Lee tied for third with a card of 93.

Deno Contos earned a victory in the C Flight with a score of 91. Josh Calhounbirdied the 16th hole which was the difference maker as he outlastedJunior Tunnell, of the Atlanta tour, for second (94-95). Bob Russell, also from Atlanta, placed fourth (96).

It was smooth sailing for Tim Schofieldin the D Flight. He birdies the opening hole and made the putts he needed to; coming away with a comfortable win (93). Jeremy Wilson took second as he shot an even 100 while Greg Minton finished one stroke behind Wilson.
