Carl Bierman- "D" Flight Champion
The Western Piedmont division of the EGOLF AMATEUR TOUR kicked off their 2008 season on Saturday, March 1 at the Woodbridge Golf Club in Shelby, NC. Woodbridge typically requires the use of most every club in the bag. The lay out is Links style with some long par 3’s. The greens were in excellent condition and very fast. The weather was fantastic with temperatures in the upper 60’s and just a slight breeze. The tournament played in just under five hours and the pace of play was excellent. Improving the pace of play has been a long-standing goal of the Upstate Golf Services staff. A big “THANKS†goes to all our players who are working with us to make our tournaments more fun and enjoyable.
Jody Clary of Grover, NC finally got his AMATEUR status back and scored the win in the Championship Flight with a score of 76. Trent Shelby of Hickory scored a 79 for second, with Mike Cochran of Gastonia and Doug Newton of Forest City right behind for third and fourth.
Wesley Ellis of Kings Mountain, on his home course shot a 78 to take “A†Flight honors over three players who all shot 84’s. Steve Rogers of Gastonia won the scorecard play-off for second with Daniel Thompson of Gastonia and Rick Bradshaw of Denver, NC in third and fourth.
Tony Parker of Hickory captured the “C†Flight in a play-off with Eddie Mustin of York, SC. Both players finished regulation with scores of 89. David Morris of Marion, NC has re-joined the tour this year and finished third. Glad to see the Morris brothers back on tour. They are a lot of fun to be around.
Carl Bierman of Rock Hill, SC shot 93 to capture the “D†Flight honors, with Mark Yerrid of Arden, NC and Danny Morris of Marion, NC right behind. Mark and Danny shot 95 and 96 for second and third place.
