2008 Egolf Amateur Tour
The EGOLF AMATEUR TOUR held the first Western Carolinas combo event of the 2008 season on Saturday, April 19 at the Deerbrook Golf & Country Club. THE DEERBROOK MASTERS event is the largest amateur golf event, except for the TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP, held in the Carolinas region. Deer Brook has a wonderful lay out, with wide fairways and treacherous greens. The weather was cool with temperatures in the low 60’s with moderate winds. The rain and storms threatened all day and affected the pace of play if not the playing conditions. With the crowded course conditions and some other problems the “C” Flight was shortened to 16 hole event and the “D” Flight to 15 hole event. The pace of play was much slower than it should have been. We apparently have some work to do on our pace of play improvement program. Jody Clary from Grover, SC shot a sizzling 69 in the mourning round to take the Championship Flight by two strokes over Shane Thompson of Canton, NC. Shane Owen of Fletcher, NC finished third with a 76, just ahead of David Cauthen from Belmont, NC and Gary Gillespie of Asheville, NC. Both players finished play tied at 79. Daniel Thompson of Gastonia, NC shot a 76 to take “A” Flight honors over Tim Knight of Lexington, SC and Ron Hyatt from Simpsonville, SC. Tim won the scorecard play-off for second place. Steve Rogers of Gastonia, NC placed fourth with a 79 in a scorecard play-off over Mickey Shaine of Chesnee, SC. Christopher Tomey from Spartanburg, SC took “B” Flight with a 76 just ahead of Scott Jackson of Gastonia, NC. Roy Santonil from Charlotte, NC placed third by one stroke over John Pearson’s 79. John hails from Gastonia, NC. Mary Jordaine from the hills of Franklin, NC captured the “C” Flight with a 69 over Tom Price from Central, SC who shot a 73. Steve Gilliam of Greenville, SC placed fourth in a scorecard play-off with Fred Bertha of Boiling Springs, SC and Tony Parker from Hickory, NC. All three players finished regulation tied at 76. “C” Flight shortened to 16 holes due to darkness. Only six players did not finish. Janice Crocker of Newberry, SC scored a 73 to take “D” Flight honors, with Timothy Riordan of Fort Myers, FL in second. Tim took second in a scorecard play-off with Carl Bierman from Rock Hill, SC. Both players shot scores of 74. Leslie Kress from Anderson, SC finished fourth with a 75. “D” Flight shortened to 15 holes due to dankness. All of this flight was on the last three holes when play suspended. The next tour stop in Western NC and Upstate SC will be held May 3rd at The Cleghorn Country Club near Rutherfordton, NC. The course, recently re-designed with a multi-million dollar upgrade is an excellent test of golf for all skill levels. We would like to encourage everyone to come out, join the tour, and enjoy playing competitive tournament golf. The EGolf Amateur Tour is open to all amateur golfers of all ages. Please visit our web site and try our tour. Anyone can play one tournament as a guest, to see how much fun it is to play competitive golf. Due to some groups not being able to finish their round, the "C" Flight scores were added up thru hole #16 and the "D" Flight scores were added up thru hole #15.
