2018 South Riding Recap

Competition couldn’t get any tighter than this as three of the five flights required an on-the-course playoff to determine a winner.

Make that three wins in a row for Kelly Holliday in the Championship Flight of the DC Metro Tour. Last weekend, it was Lake Presidential. The week before, it was Potomac Shores. On Saturday, he came out victorious with another strong round, a 6-over-par performance. Holliday made four birdies and seven pars. Aaron Grocholski finished second (81).

Whoa! The A Flight saw a three-person playoff. David Pongrace, Keith Gibert and James Beresh all finished with a card of 78. Pongrace tallied four birdies while Beresh made three. But it all came down a playoff. Unfortunately for Beresh, he was taken out of the competition when he bogeyed the first playoff hole and the others made par. Attempt number two resulted in another set of pars. Finally, on the third playoff attempt, Gibert bogeyed and Pongrace pulled out the par for the win. As a result, second-place went to Keith Gibert, third to James Beresh and Russel Cook carded a 79 for fourth.

After 18 holes, Stan Boyer and Daniel Donovan were heading to a playoff as well. The two battled back-and-forth in the B Flight. Even the playoff came down to the wire. In the end, when Boyer two-putted from 20 feet away he beat Donovan by one-stroke for the win. Julian Baniwas rounded out the top-3 with an 85.

And the ties kept on coming – this time in the C Flight. Esdras Garcia took the lead on the 13th hole. Garcia’s advantage stood until the final hole when Manny Gomes made a par, forcing a playoff as they both carded an 87 on the round, Garcia came away with the victory.

James Briggs was a winner in the D Flight with a 93. Sal Alexander and Ray Wilson finished in a two-way tie for second (96) while Don Stackhouse placed fourth with a 97.
