The Knoxville Division of the EGolf AMATEUR TOUR held their ninth event of the 2008 season on Saturday, July 12 at the Links at Avalon Golf Club in South Knoxville, TN. Avalon is a fantastic layout, with a beautiful clubhouse and full amenities, including a well-stocked pro shop. This course winds thru the valleys and hillsides providing many elevation changes and beautiful views. Water is in play on only three holes, but they are all the finishing holes and must be played with care. The greens rolled very true, but getting the right speed was tricky, especially on down hill putts. The weather was hot and muggy, but the rain held off till after the event was complete. The tournament played in four hours and thirty minutes and the competitors had a great time. The course staff did a wonderful job hosting out tournament. We are looking forward to coming back next year to enjoy another wonderful golfing experience at Avalon. Greg Howell captured the Championship Flight honors with a score of 82 last tournament winner David Vick right behind with an 84. David missed some close putts to let the victory slip away as Greg took full advantage of the situation. Wesley Clenney narrowly captured the win in “A” Flight with a score of 82. Steve Cronberg finished right behind with an 83 and Mancel Wakham scored an 85 for third place. Charles Reagan took the “B” Flight with a stellar round of 86 with Bruce Russell right behind with a score of 87. Bruce missed a tap in on the last hole to miss a play-off with Charles. Tour Director Joe lee finished third with an 88 after getting in the water off the eighteenth tee. This is the first time I have had the opportunity to play in Knoxville this year and I really had a great time, quoted Joe after the tournament. The “C” and “D” Flight players were on vacation this week. We are looking forward to having those players back at the next event at Reem’s Creek Golf Club in Weaverville, NC on July 19. This will be a combo event with our Asheville Tour and should be a great tournament on a wonderful golf course.
