GolfNow! Chicago Tournament @ Coyote Crossing

Results – May 19, 2012

Coyote Crossing Golf Course was the site of the 4th event on the Indianapolis Golfweek Amateur Tour.  Coyote Crossing is new to the Indianapolis Tour and all of the players raved about the course.  The day was hot, greens were fast, and the competition was top notch.

In the A-Flight it was a story of two nines for most players.  Kyle Masterson started his day with a birdie and finished the front 9 with a score of 37 (+1).  Masterson was followed by Chicago Tour Player, Shad Lindsey, with a 39 and a host of other players at 40 and 41.  Josh Hilderbrand and Dave Zeider started to make a run at Masterson with birdies early on the back 9.  Following their early birdies Hilderbrand and Zeider played steady golf posting scores of 77 and 78 respectively.   Masterson and Lindsey were unable to match their front 9 scores leading them both to a final score of 80.  Nathan Allen and Justin Briggs also posted a score of 80 of the day.  Despite not feeling well, Hilderbrand won his 2nd event of the year and is now leading the point’s race in the A-Flight.

Jason Whiteman was able to capture his first win by holding off Todd Smith in the B-Flight.  Whiteman got off to a fast start with a birdie on the first hole and that ended up being the margin of victory.  After the front 9, Whiteman had a one shot lead over Smith.  Max Pipes also made a run at Whiteman and Smith, but was unable to catch them.  Whiteman ended the day with a career best 85 on the Golfweek Amateur Tour.

The C-Flight had its most competitive tournament of the year with 4 players within two shots of the winner.  Jeff Gastineau and Doug Kea both shot 44 on the front nine, while Jim Allen trailed them by just one.    Two new Indianapolis Tour members, A.D. Brown and Chad Wolf, got off to slow starts but were not shy on getting into the mix on the back nine.  Brown had the lowest nine hole score of the day on the back 9 with a 43, giving him a total of 92.  Wolf had a birdie on the twelfth hole giving him a tie for the lead through 12 holes, but he ended up one shot out of the lead by shooting 91.  Allen finished both of his 9’s with birdies and that too was not enough, leaving him one shot back.  Kea had a one shot lead over Gastineau on the 18thtee, but Kea found trouble off the tee and was unable to recover and Gastineau made a par for the win.  Gastineau posted a score of 90 and that gave him his first win on the Indianapolis Golfweek Amateur Tour.  Gastineau previously played on the Charlotte Golfweek Amateur Tour where he has also won.

The D-Flight would be no different from the rest of the flights, producing a winner by just one stroke.  Carol Davis made history today on the Indianapolis Golfweek Amateur Tour by being the first woman to win in any flight.  Davis trailed John Currens after the front nine by four strokes, but as the temperature of the day warmed up so did Davis.  Davis was able to draw even with Currens after the twelfth hole and from there it was neck and neck.  Davis took the decisive one shot lead after the sixteenth hole and then made pars on 17 and 18 for the win.

Skins – A & B Flight: Nathan Allen and Jason Whiteman

Skins – C & D Flight: Jim Allen, A.D. Brown, Chad Wolf, & A.J. Work

C.T.F – A & B Flight: Shad Lindsey

C.T.F – C & D Flight: A.D. Brown

Thank you to General Manager, Shane Weist, of Coyote Crossing Golf Course for an outstanding experience today.  The golf course was in fantastic shape and the Indianapolis Golfweek Amateur Tour looks forward to returning in 2013.

The Links Golf Club

Saturday, May 5, 2012

The Indianapolis Tour made its third stop of the 2012 season at The Links Golf Club.  The Links was the first of four new stops on the Indianapolis Tour.  It was a perfect day for golf as temperatures were in the 80’s.

The A-Flight had the most intense battle of the day.  Nathan Allen posted the first 9-hole score under par this year.  Following the front 9, Allen had six other players nipping at his heals.  Birdies were plentiful on the front 9, but the back 9 was a different story.  On the back 9 only two players (Don Yeats and Andy Smith) posted multiple birdies.  Yeats trailed Allen by 3 after the front 9, but after carding birdies on holes 10 & 11 they were tied.  Smith trailed Allen by 4 going into the back 9 and started his charge with a birdie on the 14th.  Smith continued his charge by playing the final 5 holes at one under par and posting a score of 76.  Allen was unable to continue making birdies on the back 9, leading a score of 77.  Yeats followed up his birdies on the back 9 with steady play and also posted a score of 76.  With Smith and Yeats both posting scores of 76, the Indianapolis Tour had its first ever playoff and the playoff did not disappoint.  They headed to the first tee for a sudden death playoff, but this was anything but sudden.  The playoff took nearly an hour because the Smith and Yeats played 5 extra holes!!!  Yeats was victorious on the par 5 fifth hole, taking home his first Golfweek Amateur Tour win in just his second event.

The B-Flight was also exciting, but they had a champion after the end of regulation.  TJ Schwarz and Tony Witt did battle all day.  Schwarz had a 2-shot after the front 9, but this was Witt’s home course so no lead was too big.  Witt birdied the par 4, 11th to draw even with Schwarz.  Schwarz played steady building a 5 shot lead with only three holes to play.  An allergic reaction tried to slow down Schwarz on the final holes, but he was able to hold off Witt by 1…85 to 86.

C-flight could also been known as the Flight of Champions, as the two winners this year (Mike Labanz & Doug Kea) were playing along with last years winner (Jim Allen), and former D-Flight winner, Darrell Davis.  Allen and Davis did not find there Championship form on this day.  Labanz and Kea battled it out on this day.  Labanz had a 1 stroke lead going into the back 9.  Kea made a birdie on the par 3 twelfth hole to take a 1-shot lead and never looked back.  Kea won his second straight event with a score of 87.

D-Flight saw the return of Phil Rossman to the winner’s circle.  Rossman played in the first event of the year at Timbergate where he was victorious and the result was the same at The Links.  Rossman posted a score of 95 to win.  In addition to winning the D-Flight Rossman had the only Skin in the C & D Flight, making him the big winner of the day.

Skins in the A & B Flight were won by: Nathan Allen, Dwayne Dixon, Andy Smith, Steven Stacey, Don Yeats, and Tony Witt.

Closest to the Flagstick (A & B Flight) – TJ Schwarz

Closest to the Flagstick (C & D Flight) – John Currens

Thank you to Head Golf Professional, Pat Sullivan, and the rest of The Links Golf Club staff for the hospitality this past weekend.  We appreciate everything you did for the Golfweek AmateurTour.
