He immediately became the "Open Doctor" and in quick succession re-designed such major venues as Baltusrol-Lower course, Olympic-Lake course, Southern Hills, Oak Hill and Congressional Country Club.During his career, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed or re-designed nearly 500 courses in at least 40 states in the U.S. and 35 countries around the world.

NATIONAL CHAMP FINALLY WINS LOCAL GOLFWEEK TOUR EVENT AT WHISPERING PINES

Whispering Pines, NC

(April 21, 2012)

Last October Daren Green of Durham made the year-ending trip to Hilton Head for the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour National Championship Finals. Representing the Raleigh/Pinehurst Tour at that event, Green emerged as the winner of the B Flight competition, besting over 150 entrants from Tours all over the country.

Winners (left to right)  Mark Lawson - C Flight;

Daren Green B Flight;   Henry Lech  - D Flight

Funny thing about that victory was that in 10 years of competition in his local events, Green had never secured a B Flight win prior to being the "top-dog" at the Nationals.

Green changed that record with a sudden death playoff win at The Country Club of Whispering Pines - The West Course - against Greenville's Jimmy Adams. Both finished regulation play with 80s and then headed out for the playoff. This win wasn't gonna be easy for Green though, who worked 3rd shift the night before and came straight to the course from work. Adams then made a 30 foot clutch putt to extend the playoff. Green managed to out-steady him however and take the playoff on the 2nd extra hole.

Joining Green as a local Tour winner for the first time were 3 other players in the event. First amongst them was A Flight winner James Adamski of Fayetteville. Adamski was playing in his very first Tour event and shot a 78 to nip Kernersville's Billy Lankford by 1 stroke to grab the top spot.

Asheboro's Mark Lawson, playing in his second year of Tour competition, got his first taste of the winners circle in the C Flight with an 82 that was also 1 stroke clear of 2 pursuers - Fort Bragg's Jason Goodwin and Eric Friar of Whispering Pines. Henry Lech of Fayetteville enjoyed his 1st win as a Tour member with an 88 that gave him a 2-shot cushion over West End's Tom Anderson for the D Flight crown.

Winners (left to right):  James Prasse Championship Flight;

James Adamski -  A Flight

The only repeat winner was James Prasse of Fayetteville in the Championship Flight, whose 74 was 4 shots clear of Raleigh's Don Moore. Not only had Prasse won on Tour before, but this win made it 2-in-a-row as he also emerged victorious last week at Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro.

"Prasse's play has been impressive this year", noted Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "I'm expecting big things from him this coming October at those National Finals in Hilton Head".

Next stop for the Golfweek Tour is Carolina Trace - the Lakes Course on Saturday, April 28. Any amateur golfer interested in playing in that event, or any other Golfweek Tour event, can contact Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or email him at behgolf@aol.com.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #141

.

Remember two weeks ago when Jerry found his ball sitting on a clump of fescue in the rough? Well this time, a similar thing happens, but he is careful when he address the ball not to do so too firmly. Unfortunately, when he starts his club back to make a stroke at the ball, the movement of his club causes his ball again to move downward. He completes the stroke but completely misses the ball. The ball now is on the ground in the middle of the clump of grass.

Jerry:

A. Has incurred a 1-stroke penalty, the stroke made at the ball counts, and he should play the ball as it lies.

B. Has incurred a 1-stroke penalty, the stroke made at the ball counts, and he should replace the ball on the spot or on the nearest spot most similar, no closer to the hole.

C. Has incurred no penalty, the stroke made at the ball counts and he should play the ball as it lies.

D. Has incurred no penalty, the stroke made at the ball counts and he should replace the ball on the spot or on the nearest spot most similar, no closer to the hole.

Answers

A. is the correct answer. I quote Rule 18-2b:

b . Ball Moving After Address

If a player's ball in play moves after he has addressed it (other than as a result of a stroke), the player is deemed to have moved the ball and incurs a penalty of one stroke .

The ball must be replaced, unless the movement of the ball occurs after the player has begun the stroke or the backward movement of the club for the stroke and the stroke is made.

Exception : If it is known or virtually certain that the player did not cause his ball to move, Rule 18-2b does not apply.

Rule 18-2 states three things that apply to Jerry's situation: 1) Jerry is deemed to have moved the ball; 2) Jerry incurs a 1-stroke penalty; and, 3) Jerry does not replace the ball must play the ball as it lies. Thus the stroke counts, he adds the 1-stroke penalty to his score and must now play the ball from deep in the rough.

Confusion often arises around this situation and the wording of this particular Rule. Remember, by definition a stroke is the downward movement of a club with the intention of striking and moving a ball. Jerry's ball moved as a result of his backswing, not as result of his stroke, thus his 1-stroke penalty.

The second paragraph of Rule 18-2b tells us in this situation Jerry does not replace the ball. It does not say there is no penalty, that was already decided in the first paragraph. Since he does not replace the ball, the obvious intention is to play the ball as it lies. In Jerry's case he completely missed the ball, but he could have just as easily moved it a few yards, or adjusted his swing to have caught the ball squarely and hit it flush. Because the movement of the ball occurred prior to the stroke, he cannot avoid the penalty. And, since the stroke counts, he plays the ball were it ended up.

It's important you understand, even if Jerry was able to hit the ball on the green or even into the hole, he would still have to count the 1-stroke penalty because the ball moved prior to and not as a result of his stroke.

How many of you would call such a penalty on yourself?

In a similar circumstance, Bobby Jones did.

Tour Weather Guidelines:

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
