2012 GOLFWEEK PRE-SEASON TOURNAMENT #2
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18
MID-PINES RESORT
-----
Mid-Pines Hole #2 - PAR 3
ONE DOWN AND ONE TO GO - THE NEXT PRE-SEASON TOURNAMENT.
Sign-up now to play Mid-Pines on February 18 with a 10 AM shotgun start time. Similar to The Legacy, this event should sell out. Don't be left out.
Again, this is a pre-season event for both the Golfweek and Senior Tours - as such no points will be awarded, but similar to The Legacy Tournament, there should be a sell-out and a huge prize pool.
The 2012 Tournaments are now posted and you can see them here 2012 GolfWeek Amateur Tour Schedule . As expected, the tour schedule is loaded with quality courses, including a number of private venues that rank among the top in the state.
Please let me know if you want a position in the second Pre-season Tournament at Mid-Pines on February 18.

HUGE FIELD AND PERFECT WEATHER FOR 2012 GOLFWEEK & SENIOR TOUR "KICK-OFF"
2012 Legacy Flight Winners
(L to R): A Flight - Ron Hockensmith; B Flight - Tom Kubla;
C Flight - Michael Hawkins; D Flight - George Greer
124 golfers signed up for the combined Golfweek and Senior Amateur Tours pre-season kick-off event at The Legacy Golf Links. Perfect weather and immaculate greens greeted the players.
While some tour members showed signs of "ring-rust" after the long winter layoff, others were in mid-season form as the top scores in each of the five flights would attest.
One player, Don Tabat in the Championship Flight, displayed both rust and mid season form in the same round. After finishing the front-9 with a rather lackluster 41, the Lexington resident rebounded with one of the lowest 9-hole scores in the 15 year history of the Tour with a 31 on the back side. His round was highlighted by posting birdies on 5 of the last 6 holes. Gary Strickfaden of Southern Pines was 2 strokes back with a 74.
In the A Flight, which played from one tee-box shorter than the Championship Flight, 2nd year player Ron Hockensmith of Pinehurst also posted a 74 to take top honors. Hockensmith was 2 shots clear of both Tour rookie Walt Janis of Greensboro and Advance's Mike Meadows.
One player managed to break 80 in the B Flight- Pinehurst's Tom Kubla, whose 78 gave him a 3-shot cushion over Cary's Russ Padgett and Gary Fesperman of Charlotte.
In the C Flight, winning has become somewhat of a habit to Kernersville's Michael Hawkins. Earlier this month Hawkins traveled to Hilton Head to play in their season opening, 2-day "Icebreaker Open". Hawkins came from 12 shots back after the 1st day to post a solid victory there. Today he was one of two players to break 90 in the flight as his 86 was 3 better than James Eatmon of Simms.
After taking a year off from Tour competition, Fayetteville's George Greer made his return a triumphant one as his 90 was his lowest Tour score ever and placed him 7 shots clear of the 2nd place finisher, Carlos Simpson of Siler City in the D Flight.
"We've got one more pre-season event on February 18 at Mid Pines Resort before the regular season starts in earnest for both Tours the 1st week of March", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "I've still got some spots open in that one, and we anticipate the same mix of new members and Tour veterans then that we enjoyed today".
Any amateur golfer interested in competing on either Tour in 2012 can contact Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556 or by emailing him at behgolf@aol.com.

Black Card Members Exclusive Privileges:
|
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions |
Question or Situation:
Terry and Mike end up tied for low gross in their club's stroke play championship. As per the conditions of the competition, in case of a tie at the end of the final round, there will be a three-hole play-off starting at the 16th. After that is goes to sudden death. On the 16th, a par five, both players are on the green; Terry in two, about 40 feet from the hole and Mike in three, six feet from the hole. Terry putts first, his ball stopping about 6 inches from the cup. Mike remarks, "Great putt, nice birdie, Terry." Terry lifts his ball and moves to retrieve the flagstick. Mike makes his putt, for a birdie four. The players tee off on the next hole and twenty minutes later walk off the 18th green and report to the head pro with a hole-by-hole and nearly stroke-by-stroke recount of the playoff.
Who is the club champion?
A. Terry
B. Mike
C. Neither Terry nor Mike, they have to go to sudden death
D. No clue.
Answer:
The correct answer is: B, Mike. On the first playoff hole, Terry lifted his ball and failed to hole out. Thus, under Rule 3-2 he is DQed. This is a stroke play event and even with just two competitors in the playoff, it continues to be stroke play and players must hole out to continue with the playoff. See R33-6. |
