OUT-OF-TOWNERS DOMINATE GOLFWEEK EVENT
Pinehurst,NC
July 18, 2015
A nice perk of being a member of the Golfweek Tour is that any member of any tour can play as a guest in any event on any other tour in the system. In today's event held at Pinewild Country Club, on the Holly Course three "out-of-towners" took advantage of that ability to register wins in 3 of the 5 flights contested.
Leading the way in that visitor's assault was Charlotte's Kevin Ronan in the A Flight. His 71 was 7 shots clear of a threesome of local golfers: Laurinburg's Robin Neverve, Raleigh's Walter Powell, and Daren Green of Durham. His 71 was particularly impressive due to the fact that about one half hour into the event, a heavy thunderstorm dumped approximately 2 inches of rain on the course causing soggy conditions for the rest of the day that made the course play longer than the 6,425 yards on the scorecard.
The wet conditions affected scoring across the board.
Another Charlotte golfer, Allen Hagen, also managed to handle the weather conditions nicely as his 78 topped all B Flight competitors. Unlike Ronan, his margin of victory was minimal however, edging Bob Sheahan of Apex and McLeansville's Duane Fisher by a single stroke.
Jimmy Mathis of Irmo, SC was the third visitor to taste victory as his 94 tied Hillsborough's Bob Wisniewski in the D Flight for first place. This would normally result in both players going back out on the course for a sudden-death shoot-out, Wisniewski left the grounds however, effectively handing the win to Mathis. "This was my best effort on Tour" stated a happy Mathis as he received his first place trophy.
Two "locals" did have excellent showings and managed to win their flights. The amazing part was they both fired the same score: 77. Anthony Mann of Vass accomplished the feat in the Championship Flight from 7015 yards to beat Charlotte's Jeff Malone by 2 shots.
Remarkably Burlington's Jeff King was able to equal his score in C Flight competition. He was 8 shots clear of Brien Cozart of Fuquay-Varina and Mebane's Mark McDougald.
Next up for the Golfweek Tour is High Point's Willow Creek Country Club on July 25. There are openings still available for this totally private venue.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Question from week #312
In a stroke play event, on the par three 17th hole, Bruce push/fades his tee ball into the lateral water hazard where it is lost in deep water. Using the drop zone, he drops a substitute ball in the forward most area of the DZ.
The dropped ball hits the ground and then goes forward about a foot outside the DZ. Because his ball is deemed in a closely mown area and because the Local Rule for preferred lies is in effect, he marks, lifts and cleans the ball, replacing it on its original spot before playing to the green. He takes two putts to complete the hole.
What is Bruce's score for the 17th hole?
A. 5
B. 6
C. 7
D. 8
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer
A. 5.
Bruce did everything correctly. When he dropped in the DZ his ball must first strike the course on or inside the DZ line. When dropped, the ball may roll up to two club-lengths in any direction without needing to be re-dropped. This includes rolling forward and out of the DZ. He then correctly marked, lifted and cleaned his ball before replacing it as was permitted by the Local Rule in effect.
One procedural note. Many players are wrongly under the impression when dropping a ball under conditions that include “preferred lies”, the player may save steps and just simply place the ball. Not so. You must first put a ball in play, then if the spot of the ball permits marking and lifting under the L/R, you may then proceed with that procedure.

Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
