2015 GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 2015
SAPONA RIDGE COUNTRY CLUB
1:30 PM SHOTGUN
===============================================================
|
Sapona Ridge Country Club
Sapona Ridge is a private club located in Lexington, NC, and is owned by NASCAR legend Richard Childress.
Sapona Ridge CC was designed by Ellis Maples who studied under Donald Ross. This 18-hole masterpiece was established in 1968 and is set amid the hardwood forests of the Piedmont Triad.
Most of you know that the Maples family has a storied golf past dating back to the original courses in Pinehurst and their classic design principles can be seen throughout the Sapona’s golf experience.
Ellis Maples’s creative work and shotmaker's design will require you to have your course management 'A' game on when you play. You will need to think your way through every shot, exactly as golf was intended.
There are good scores to be had at Sapona but only if you know your distances, execute your shot to make sure your ball lands on the correct side of every green and with every approach shot stay below the hole. You can either be in the winners circle, be in contention or expect a long and frustrating day.
Do yourself a favor, play this course this year and hopefully you will enjoy a low score.

HUGHES "COMES BACK" FOR GOLFWEEK WIN
Sanford, NC
August 1, 2015
Kernersville's Brandon Hughes narrowly missed his 1st Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour win last week at Willow Creek Country Club in High Point, losing in a sudden-death playoff with Chapel Hill's Henry Lister.
It didn't take long for Hughes to get over that disappointment however as his 75 at Carolina Trace Country Club - The Creek Course was sufficient to take the first place trophy in the A Flight over Christianburg, VA's Joe Rollison by 2 strokes.
Carolina Trace Winner: A Flight - Brandon Hughes
Hughes' front side was a very modest 42, but he blistered the back with 3 birdies and no bogeys for a 33 and the win.
The same 2 shot margin prevailed in the B Flight competition as Anthony Butler of Whispering Pines outdueled Raleigh's Mike Mullins with an 81. While Mullins was reasonably close to Butler's final score no one else in the 24-man flight was better than 5 strokes behind his standard.
Carolina Trace Winner: B Flight - Anthony Butler
Two seemed to be the "magic number" as Mocksville's Mark Denton also enjoyed that margin of victory in taking the top spot in the C Flight. His 88 beat both Staley's Billy Sell and Rocky Mount's Tom Bullock for the top spot. Denton has also enjoyed success on the sister Senior Amateur Golf Tour for golfers over 50 as he also claimed 1st place in Thursday's Senior tilt at Colonial Country Club in Thomasville.
Carolina Trace Winner: C Flight - Mark Denton
Visiting Charlotte member William Bender was king of the D Flight with a 93 and a comfortable 4 stroke margin over Raleigh's Greg Dauscher and Mebane's Bob Wisniewski.
Carolina Trace Winner: D Flight - William Bender
Carolina Trace Winner: Championship Flight - Kevin Herring (Photo unavailable) --Photos by Rob Andrews--
The event's lowest score was also turned in by a Charlotte Tour member as Kevin Herring in the Championship Flight posted a 73. Stephen Pippin came in 2nd with a 77.
Next up for the Golfweek Tour is Sapona Ridge Country Club in Lexington on Saturday August 8, keeping intact a run of exception private venues for the Tour.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Questions from week #314
Chris’s ball cleared the water hazard fronting the green, hit the grass mound beside the green and deflected left towards a second lateral water hazard. As Chris makes his way to the other side and gets a view of the lateral water hazard, he sees a ball lying about two feet inside the hazard margin, but not in the water. As he approaches this ball he startles several green turtles that were sunning themselves on the bank. In their defensive dash to the safety of the of water, they also end up nudging this ball from the bank and it rolls down into the water. Chris goes to the water’s edge, sees the ball lying in shallow water, retrieves it and it is indeed his ball.
Select all true statements:
A. Chris may choose to play a ball under any option of R26-1.
B. Providing Chris is virtually certain the ball retrieved from the water was the one sitting on the bank, he should replace the ball on the original spot it lay before being moved by the turtles.
C. If Chris elects to play from the original spot on the bank, but is unsure of the precise spot, he should drop a ball on the estimated spot.
D. The turtles are common to water and are not outside agencies. Chris has no choice but to proceed to either play the ball as it lies or seek relief under R26-1.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answers
The True statements are A, B and C.
The turtles are outside agencies whether the ball is in or outside a hazard. The ball should be replaced unless the player is proceeding under a Rule that permits otherwise. If the exact spot is known, then Chris would place the ball. If the exact spot is unknown, then Chris should drop the ball at the estimated spot (R20-3). If after placing/dropping, Chris could still choose to proceed under an appropriate option in R26-1. It is critical that Chris is virtually certain the ball found is both his and was the ball moved by the turtles.

Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
