Sam Myers- "D" Flight Winner
The Upstate, Asheville, and Western Piedmont Divisions of THE EGolf AMATEUR TOUR held their annual BRITISH OPEN TOURNAMENT of the 2008 season on Saturday, August 2 at The Apple Valley Golf Course, in Lake Lure, NC. The course, one of two owned and operated by The Rumbling Bald Resort, feature mountain golf at its best. The Eight AM shotgun start saw 114 players fill the course in the cool mourning air. It was a beautiful day for the tournament with mild, though humid temperatures and a clear Carolina sky. The course was in excellent condition with U.S. Open type rough and smooth greens. The early mourning dew made the shots from the rough extremely difficult. The course staff did an excellent job in hosting our tournament and is looking forward to our return next year.
Shane Thompson of Canton captured the Championship Flight with a brilliant round of 72, just edging out Shane Owen from Fletcher by one stroke. Chris Hennon of Asheville continued his strong play to finish third with a 75. Carlos Mojica from Cashiers and Tommy Traynham of Belton, SC finished tied for fourth with a pair of 78’s. Four players followed with 79’s and Gary Gillespie’s 81 closed out the top ten.
Barry Taylor of Boiling Springs, SC took “A†Flight honors with a score of 79. Bill Dean of Taylors, SC carded an 80 for second, followed by Tae Jung Chang from Arden with an 82. Daniel Thompson of Gastonia and Jimmy Turner from Chesnee, SC tied for fourth with a pair of 84’s. Three players finished with 85’s and six others carded 86’s.
Cory Caldwell of Inman, SC cruised to victory in “B†Flight by two strokes over Ron Hensley from East Tennessee. Bobby Callahan from Rutherfordton captured the scorecard playoff for third over Dannie Newell from Simpsonville, SC and Steven Traynham of Roebuck, SC. All three players finished with scores of 82. An Misuk from Marshall carded her best finish of the year with a strong 83 to finish sixth.
John Holland from Cashiers took “C†Flight by three over Mary Jordaine of Franklin who shot an 82. John will be moving up to “B†Flight for the next event and Mary is on the watch list. Both have been playing well this year. Tim Peele of Columbia, SC finished third with a score of 84 with Clark Earnhardt, Justin Frady, and Gene Burgess right behind.
Sam Myers of Abbeville, SC carded an 85 to take honors in “D†Flight. This is young Sam’s first win, though there will probably be more to come. Butch Gragg finished second with a score of 88, just ahead of the scorecard playoff between Tim Riordan of Ft Myers, FL and Leslie Kress from Anderson, SC.
The next tour stop in Western NC and Upstate SC will be held August 16 at The Hejaz Golf Club in Spartanburg, SC.
