Icebreaker Recap
While there was no ice in the forecast for the February 21st tournament, Rain was certainly a concern in the days leading up to our event. However, in keeping with GWAT tradition, we planned to play our tournament rain or shine - so long as the course staff allowed.
Roughly 30 minutes before the first pairing was scheduled to tee off at 10 AM - the storms arrived. 57 golfers huddled under shelter to avoid the downpour that brought thunder and lightning with it. While the skies rumbled, directors worked out a plan with course management to allow a 12 pm shotgun start - weather permitting, of course. Around 11:30, the storms had passed and players were summoned to their carts.
The conditions that followed were daunting, but our members persisted and made the best of the challenging conditions.
Our Reigning Champ Flight winner Bryan Reynolds carded 2 birdies, shooting an 84 for the day and landing himself in a tie for 1st place with rival Justin McCutcheon. Ultimately, Bryan Reynolds prevailed in a playoff and jumps out to an early lead in the 2026 points race.
The A Flight saw Ben Roberts begin his quest for a 3rd consecutive points championship in a commanding fashion. Roberts coasted to a smooth 7-shot victory, posting an 80, very respectable given the conditions. Dean Crouch took 2nd place with 87.
In the B Flight, Defending Points Champion Jimmy Kelley finished early and was preparing for a playoff. But as luck would have it, a playoff was not necessary as Kelley edged out a tight win with his score 83, defeating 2nd place Craig Peplin by just 1 stroke.
The C Flight saw a Playoff Pairing for the ages - Charles Mathis and JR Darius - the 2 grizzled Golfweek Tour veterans both carded 92, in regulation leading them back to the course to settle their dispute while an entourage of fellow tour members followed to take in the historic battle. Ultimately, JR Darius prevailed and became the first C Flight winner in the 2026 season.
22 D Flight hopefuls wanted to hoist the Icebreaker trophy - but only 1 could taste victory today. Perhaps the surprise of the day came when the announcement rang out that none other than Jamie Moungkhoune had coasted to his first ever tour victory with a dazzling 87 on the day, defeating tour veteran Derwin Brown by 3 strokes.
All in All, It was great to see GWAT members, both new and old. With a solid turnout and excitement already brewing for the next tournament, 2026 looks to be a banner year for the Atlanta Tour!
