2025 Recap - Memorial Day Championship Regional

 

 

Laurie Warder, Dan Hubbard, Matt Jensen, Ryan Wood, and Brendon Filantres all won the 2025 Memorial Day Championship Regional hosted by PGA West in La Quinta, CA. 

A total of 76 players participated in the Two-Day event hosted by PGA West. Competitors from 19 different Local Tours took part in the Memorial Day Championship Regional, featuring The Stadium Course and The Nicklaus Tournament Course.

 

In the Championship Flight, Laurie Warder, and John DelBrocco, both from Arizona, set the pace on the first day with impressive rounds of carding a 74. They were closely pursued by Wallace Nelson (Arizona) and Randy Merrill (Las Vegas Tour Director) who finished just one stroke behind with a score of 75.

On Day Two, Warder gained a two-stroke advantage over DelBrocco on the front nine; however, DelBrocco demonstrated resilience by tying with Warder on the back nine, leading to a playoff, with both players registering a score of 78 for the day. As they approached the 18th hole for the playoff, Warder secured the victory with a par putt, claiming the trophy. Nelson fell just short of the prize, finishing with a two-day total of 155, while Merrill recorded a score of 156.

In the A Flight, the competition was intensely contested from the outset. Dan Hubbard (Louisiana North) secured the top position with a cumulative score of 165, achieved through rounds of 83 and 82. As the second day commenced, Dillon McCartney (Louisiana North) held a narrow lead of one stroke, with Keith Bolle (Michigan) closely trailing. Hubbard ultimately ascended to the top of the leaderboard, and McCartney pushed the competition into a playoff. In a dramatic finish, Hubbard successfully made a 20-foot putt for birdie, claiming the victory. Meanwhile, Bob Davis (California) finished in third place with a score of 168, following a scorecard playoff with Jakob Connick (California) and Thomas Butcher (Pacific Northwest).

 

In the B Flight, Matt Jensen (Arizona) began the tournament with an impressive performance, posting a score of 78 on Day One. Following him was Pete Quinn (Las Vegas) who shot an 84, and Patrick Tole from Charleston, SC, who recorded an 86. On Day Two, Kevin Durant (Las Vegas Tour Director) made a strong comeback and shared the lead with Jensen. The suspense continued until the very end, culminating at the 17th hole, where Durant's tripled on hole 17 ultimately secured the victory for Jensen. Tole finished in third place, submitting a scorecard of 86-92 for a total of 178.

 

In the C Flight, Ryan Wood (Arizona) secured the championship title with a total score of 180, comprising rounds of 87 and 93. Heading into Day Two, Wood held a three-stroke lead over Frank Mayfield (Arizona). Both Victor Lopez and Cody Matthews from California made remarkable comebacks on Day Two; Lopez recorded a score of 88, while Matthews posted a 90, resulting in a tie for second place with an aggregate score of 183. Following a scorecard playoff, Lopez emerged victorious, claiming second place by a margin of two strokes. Close behind was Darin Sams (Washington, DC Metro) finishing with a two-day total of 185.

 

In the D-Flight, Brendon Filantres (Arizona) secured his first Regional victory, achieving a cumulative score of 186 with rounds of 87 and 99. Entering Day Two, Filantres held an eight-stroke advantage over both John Pietrolaj (El Paso, TX/ Las Cruces, NM) and Rosemary Armenta (Arizona). Notably, Armenta staged an impressive comeback, finishing just one stroke shy of the lead. Following closely by Pietrolaj with a Two-Day total of 192, while Jeff Ranson from California recorded a score of 199.
