May 9th was the day the Golfweek Central Carolina Amateur Golf Tour arrived in Thomasville to compete at the fabulous Colonial CC. Pleasant spring weather, great course conditions, and speedy greens greeted the competitors.
In the Champ flight, Scott Kittleson visiting from the Charlotte Tour, started well and continued his fine play to the end of his round. His even par 71 score gave him a three shot victory. Outstanding golf Scott! Steven Hamby reported in with the runner up score of 74, while Matthew Lombardi carded a round of 78 in third place. Fourth place was a three way tie as Brendan Iler, Kyle Moffett, and Dalton Berry all turned in scores of 81 to the scoring table.
The A flight's Spurling Cook also got off to a great start. He continued his consistent play and ended his round with a 74 to capture his first win of the season by two strokes. Awesome golf Spurling! Kirby Moffitt finished in second place with a score of 76, while Terry Brown from the Charlotte Tour posted 84 to take third. Fourth place was snagged by Tour Director Chuck Smith with his round of 85, and Juan Sanders rounded out the top five scoring with an 88.
In the B flight, Frederick Levine and James Shoemaker shot identical scores of 84, requiring an on course sudden victory playoff. Frederick and James took off for hole one to begin the Tour Manual mandated playoff. Both players found the fairway off the tee. James’s approach shot came up just short. But Frederick hit a towering shot that came to rest just three feet from the cup. James chipped on, but his par putt slid by the hole. Frederick lined up his birdie putt and casually dropped it into the bottom of the hole for the victory. Great golf Fred! Naturally Jim’s 84 was the runner up score, while David Pitt’s 86 left him alone in third place. Fourth place was a T4 finish with David Deese from the Charleston SC Tour, and Sean Mitchell visiting from the Charlotte Tour, had matching scorecards of 77’s.
It was a battle all day in the C flight, with several lead changes along the way. As the dust settled, Robert Hockman had secured his first win of the year by posting an 87 in the single shot victory. Well played Robert! Hector Luna grabbed runner up honors with his round of 88, and Danny Perrault placed third with a score of 89. Michael Smith in from the Charlotte Tour racked up the fourth place finish with a 91, while Stephen Rhyne closed out the top five scoring with a 93.
In the D flight, our very own Tour Director Sola Edwards, fought off all the chasers en route to her two shot victory. When asked, Sola said, “I never thought a 94 would win!” Excellent golf Sola!! The runner up slot was shared by Mark Dyvig from the Charlotte Tour and Josh Tomalia with both players posting 96. Fourth place was a T4 finish as Tia Shoemaker and Tom Kubla fired a couple of 99’s!
