On Saturday July 18th, Golfweek Central Carolina Amateur Golf Tour took a short trip to Hope Mills for a rumble with Cypress Lakes GC. Warm temps continued and players took advantage.
Eighteen holes of golf was not enough to determine a winner in the Champ flight as Stephen Pippin and Larry Hardee matched scorecards with rounds of 77. Tour manual rules require an on course playoff for first place, so Stephen and Larry took off for hole one to take care of business. Larry’s bogey did not hold up on the first green as Stephen’s par putt found the bottom of the cup. Congrats Stephen, well played! Larry was the obvious runner up, while Quinton Toler from the Eastern NC Tour landed in third with a round of 82.
It was a battle all day in the A flight. And when the fight ended and the dust settled, Dwayne Pope was alone at the top of the scoreboard with an excellent round of 76. Awesome golf Dwayne! Juan Sanders was chasing all day and snagged the runner up spot with his round of 77, while Matt Queen from the Eastern NC Tour posted 82 to take third place. Tour Director Chuck Smith and Thomas Askew completed the top five scoring with matching rounds of 83.
In the B flight, Michael Cherry played a very consistent round of golf and shot a very nice round of 81 to collect the two stroke victory. Great golf Michael! Jason Parker from the Eastern NC Tour wrapped up second place with a score of 83, while Shawn Cacioppo pulled off a third place finish with a score of 84. Bill Mock ended the day in fourth place after turning in an 86, and Kenny Johnson rounded out the top five scoring with a score of 90.
Casey Honeycutt captured the victory in the C flight by firing off a great round of 82. It was Casey’s first win of the season. Excellent golf Casey! Mike Groom finished the day in the runner up position by posting 84, while Nick Dalessandro racked up the third place finish by carding 85. Melvin Jenkins secured the fourth place slot with a round of 87, and Hector Luna slid into fifth place by knocking out an 89.
Our very own Tour Director Sola Edwards fired a round of 90 in the D flight and held off all challengers enroute to a two shot victory. Outstanding golf Sola! Michael Kessler gathered runner up honors by carding 92. Third place was a T3 finish as Charles Krick, and Ken Hansley from the Eastern NC Tour, recorded matching scores of 94. Fifth place became T5 when Josh Tomalia and Benton Smith shot identical scores of 95.
Next up for the Central Carolina Tour is Gates Four Golf & Country Club in Fayetteville on Saturday Aug 1st, with 9:30 straight tee times.
