The Golfweek Central Carolina Amateur Golf Tour took a jaunt to Fayetteville on Thursday July 30th to tackle Gates Four Golf & Country Club. The weather was sunny and warm and the competition was fierce.
In the Champ flight, Dray McDonald from the Eastern NC Tour, was red hot from the start. Dray shot a great round of three under par 69 to capture a two stroke victory. Outstanding golf Dray! Chip Collins was runner up with an excellent round of one under par 71, while Larry Hardee from the Eastern NC Tour placed third with a fine even par 72 score. Mike Chuchacz from the ENC Tour grabbed fourth place with a round of one over par 73, and Wes Strader from the ENC Tour wrapped up the top five scoring by carding 74.
Ryan Culbreth from the ENC Tour, put together a consistent round of golf in the A flight posting a score of one over par 73 to take the five shot victory. Awesome golf Ryan! The runner up position was shared by Thomas Askew and Juan Sanders with matching scores of 78. Fourth place ended as a T4 with Jamie Hollis, and Daniel Horwitz from the Charlotte Tour, recording identical scores of 80.
It was a battle all day at the top of the B flight. When the scoring dust settled, David Pitt was holding onto a single shot victory with a round of 83. Great golf David! Another runner up slot had to be shared as Shawn Cacioppo and Nick Dalessandro (Nicky D), ended the day with scores of 84. Frederick Levine grabbed fourth place by carding 89, while Eric Walker from the Charlotte Tour and Sebastian Restrepo closed out the top five by returning scores of 91.
In the C flight, Casey Honeycutt found his rhythm early in the round and kept it going to the last shot. Casey’s 84 not only gave him a five shot victory, but his second in a row. Excellent golf Casey! Yet another runner up position had to be shared as Melvin Jenkins and Mike Groom turned in matching 89’s. Nick Wilson from the ENC Tour snagged fourth place with a round of 91, while Robert Kessler’s 93 closed out the top five scoring.
In the D flight, Josh Simmons from the Atlanta GA Tour made his drive more worthwhile by compiling a score of 84 to capture the victory by three shots. Great job Josh! Gilly Torres shot the lone score of 87 that became the runner up the score. Third and fourth places were a T3 as Michael Kessler and Josh Tomalia entered duplicate rounds of 88. Meanwhile, our very own Tour Director Sola Edwards’ 92 rounded out the top five scores.
After a brief break, next up for Central Carolina it’s the fabulous Tanglewood Park Champion Course in Clemmons on Aug 22nd with an 8:30 straight tee time start.
Since opening in 1958, the Tanglewood Championship course has consistently ranked as one of the top public courses in the nation and has a deep, rich tradition of hosting some of golf's most prestigious tournaments; the most notable being the 1974 PGA Championship.
It also hosted the PGA Vantage Championship (1988–2002), and underwent a major 2018 renovation led by Robert Trent Jones II.
