Tanglewood Golf Course

The Golfweek Central Carolina Amateur Golf Tour took a short trip west to take on the fabulous Tanglewood Champion Golf Course on Saturday August 22nd. The temps moderated somewhat, but the conditions were excellent with some challenging rough.

In the Champ flight, Chris Gooch fired off an excellent two over par score of 72 on the par 70 layout. The six shot victory was Chris’s second of the 2026 season. Outstanding golf Chris!  Wes Strader from the Eastern NC Tour recorded the runner up score of 78, while Stephen Pippin took third place with an 81.

Riley Gooch(yes, Chris’s son) had a battle on his hands all day in the A flight with five golfers trading blows and multiple lead changes. When the dust settled, and the scores were tallied, Riley’s score of 76 held on to a slim one shot victory. And just like dad, it was Riley’s second win of the year. Awesome golf Riley!  It was so close today that there was a three way tie for runner up honors as Donnie Pritt from the Eastern NC Tour, Dwayne Pope, and Tour Director Chuck Smith all returned scores of 77. Roger Stevenson completed the top five scoring with a round of 78.

In the B flight, David Pitt had his own close call as his round of 80 was another single stroke victory. It also turned out to be David’s first win of the season. Great golf David, and Congrats!  P.K. Gumbs grabbed the runner up spot with his score of 81, while Frederick Levine snagged third place with a round of 83. Fourth place was carded by Nick Dalessandro with an 85, and Michael Cherry closed out the top five scoring with his 86.

Mike Groom got off to a hot start in the C flight and continued his fine play to the end of his round while posting an 83 in the two shot win. Excellent golf Mike!  Melvin Jenkins captured second place by shooting 85, while Casey Honeycutt placed third with a round of 89. Fourth place was a T4 as Josh Simmons from the Atlanta GA Tour and Dan Parris carded identical scores of 90.

In the D flight, Josh Tomalia put together a consistent round of golf posting 90 to capture a three shot victory. It was Josh’s first win of the season. Well played round Josh!  Benton Smith grabbed the runner up honors with his score of 93, while our very own Tour Director Sola Edwards and Tia Shoemaker reported matching 96’s to the scoring table.

Next up for Central Carolina is Forest Oaks Country Club, (not Whispering Woods), in Greensboro on Saturday August 29th with an 11:00am straight start!  Come out and join us!
