~~~ Tournament Recap ~~~
A tour stop at Thanksgiving Point GC yielded 3 first-time Flight Champions, as a new Salt Lake single-day record was set with 69 players competing. The championship course in Lehi is one of the area’s best and once served as a Utah’s only PGA Tour stop on the Korn Ferry Tour. A great course, in wonderful condition, with challenging, undulating greens helped the cream rise to top this past Saturday.
In CHAMP Flight, Tanner McMillan (81) put the disappointment of being on the losing end of a 7-hole hole playoff at Wolf Creek behind him and won his first tournament on the Golfweek Amateur Tour. McMillan won by one stroke over both Daniel Meaders (82) and Hendra Wijaya (82). Both Meaders and Wijaya had birdie opportunities on 18 to force a playoff, but would miss giving Tanner the championship hardware. We would like to wish Tanner the best as he is off to become a Cardinal at North Idaho College and will be competing in the Northwest Athletic Conference this Fall. We will be following you closely Tanner, rooting for you and your school’s success and can’t wait for you to come back and compete with us again.
Alec Rosales (74) won his second tournament title, besting John Gordon (76) and Jeff Clifford (76) by two strokes. Gordon would take 2nd place prize money over Clifford, with a better back nine on the scorecard playoff (37:38). Brian Zullo (79) and Colby McDonald (79) tied for 4th place, rounding out the money line with Zullo beating McDonald for 4th place prize money 42 to 37 on the back nine scorecard playoff.
In B-Flight, Kevin Curtis won for the first time on the Golfweek Amateur Tour, walloping the field by 5 strokes and firing an impressive 5-over 77. Dennis McGraw  (82) finished in solo 2nd place. Joshua Henshaw (83) and Chad Davies (85) finished 3rd and 4th respectively. Guest Austin Becker (86) rounded out the money line, finishing in a tie for 5th place with Jim Dean (86) and Rich Fong (86). Becker’s back nine of 42 would earn him the purse winnings on a scorecard tiebreaker over Dean’s 43 and Fong’s 44.
C-Flight was a special treat for birthday boy, Mark Torbett (82) as he celebrated his 51st by winning his first tour event. It would take a playoff however, as Greg Guest (82) matched him after getting up and down for par on the 18th hole. The players would go back to the Par-4 18th for an on-course playoff that contained little drama. Torbett and Guest both hit the short grass, but Torbett stuck his approach to 12 feet while Guest missed the green. Guest would fail to get up and down and 2 putts later, Mark Torbett was crowned flight champion! Casey Bice (86) and David North (86) tied for 3rd place, but Bice would claim the 3rd place money, with the better back nine on the scorecard playoff; 42 to 45.
D-Flight saw Brandon Coombs (87) glide to an easy victory, his second on Tour. Six shots back in 2nd place was Matthew Walden (93). Jon Burningham (94) and newcomer Topher Miles (94) tied for 3rd place. Burningham would take 3rd place money and Miles 4th place money, with Burningham posting a better back nine of 44 to Miles’ 48.
There were just TWO Super Skins winners, each taking home a very healthy $308; Las Vegas visiting tour member, Kreg Klaver with an eagle on 2 and Andrew Pace with the lone birdie on the very short par-4 3rd hole. Overall Closest-To-The-Pin winners were Cory Hester (4), Craig Peacock (7), Josh Henshaw (15) and John Gordon (17) at 5 inches!
Congratulations to all of our champions and winners on the day. We couldn’t be prouder to continue to break our attendance records with nearly every event this season. Next up: The Red, White, & Blue Classic; a single-day event on Saturday, August 8th at the private Hubbard Golf Course, played on the grounds of Hill Air Force Base.
