The final event of the year was held today at Apple Valley Golf Club in Howard, Ohio. The weather was picture perfect, and with four of the five flights up for grabs, this tournament was the most important of the year.
The Champ flight had four competitors today, with two of them having a legitimate shot at the season long title. Tim Ford’s steady play, and round of 74 gave him a one shot victory over John Fryman. But the second place finish gave John enough points to take home the Champ flight title for the year. John is consistently one of our best players, and this year was no different.
A flight has been a battle all year between three players. Mike Bilderback, Eric Croker, and Brad Herpolsheimer. All with different strengths in their games. Mike knocks the cover off the ball, Eric has no idea what it’s like to hit out of the rough, he hits so many fairways, and Brad makes thirty foot putts look like tap ins. With that said, all of them knew they had to win today. So off they went. With the course in great shape, and calm conditions, scoring was good. Eric tied his best round of the year with a 76, giving him a one shot victory over Mike. Eric has moved up the ladder, starting in B flight when he first joined, and now winning A flight. Congratulations are in order.
B flight had its fair share of great scoring this year. And that solid play gave the golfers momentum going into our last major. Our first of two playoffs on the day, started with Melvin Harrington, and Devon Ratliff. Both players carding 84’s on the day. It didn’t take long and Melvin was hoisting the trophy. Jacob Bridges shot 88, and tied for third on the day. That gave him enough points to win B flight for the year. This is Jacob’s first year on tour. What a great start, keep up the good work! Dennis Henderson finished second on the year. Dennis placed in the top ten in Hilton Head last year, and is ready to make a run at it again in 2010.
The most competitive flight this year was C flight. Almost every tournament, they consistently had the most players. Among those players were some of our most dedicated members. With three guys fighting for every point available, Bill Sluka, Gary Andrews, and Zavier Neeley all had a great shot at the title. With the pressure on, Bill fired an incredible round of 79 on his way to a six shot victory over Gary Andrews. Bill’s first win of the year couldn’t have come at a better time, it gave him the points lead for the season long championship. Gary Andrews finishes second, and Zavier finished third for the year.
D flight had its biggest participation of the year today. With two guests of the seven players participating for the first time, their rounds of 93 put them right in the middle of a playoff. Joe Vickery, coming all the way from Cape Coral, Florida, and Brandon Fedor from here in Ohio. The two friends headed to the first hole for a sudden death playoff, and Brandon came out on top. Wayne Dawson played great all year, and his hard work paid off. He coasted to the points title for D flight in 2010, and we hope to see him try it again next year. Scott Allen finishes second, and William Gilstrap rounds out the top three.
I want to thank everyone for participating this year. Brie and I had a great time, and can’t wait to do it all again next year. We have a great schedule next season, and hope to have many new members. Let’s go down and get that team championship in Hilton Head!
