Cooks Creek Golf Club was host to the third tournament of the year for the Columbus Golfweek Amateur Tour. With better than expected weather, we had some of our best scores of the year. With the course in great shape, and players eager to play some golf, it was overall a great day.
Winning his third straight tournament in Champ flight today was Rich Campbell. Another great round of 76 with one birdie shows why Rich is our most consistent player on tour. Coming in second was Jeff Maier with a solid 81. His two birdies also held up in his flight skins as well as super skins. Rounding out the top three was tour newcomer Kyle Crossfield.
The A flight had multiple records broken today, and that was by one man. That man was Eric Croker. His Golfweek Tour career low round of 72 was our best score in the A flight. His six birdies is the most ever recorded by an A flight player. If not for his double bogey on 18, a third record would have been set for the first under par round in the A flight. Coming in second was Mike Bilderback with a 77. Shooting 43-34 shows that when Mike gets hot there isn’t too many people that can catch up. Coming in third was Ron Charlton just one stroke behind with a 78. The A flight is starting to get very competitive. The rest of the year should be fun.
The B flight saw our most consistent scores of the day. With a handful of players bunched right at the top, Josh Davis pulled off the one stroke victory with an excellent round of 82. He hopes winning his first tournament will get him on a roll for the rest of the year. Devon Ratliff and new member James Huffman both turn in 83’s. The number one handicap third hole at Cooks Creek is a 427 yard par four, known for its demanding tee shot. Devon’s par sealed the deal and gave him the second place finish on the scorecard playoff.
C flight had another great turnout once again. 18 players went out today to show why the C flight is one of our best. Lance Happenny pulled off a six stroke victory shooting an impressive 82. His best round of the year to date, shows everybody he is someone to reckon with in the C flight. New player Michael Bogutz and Dave Ehret come to the scorer’s table with great rounds of 88. Scorecard playoff goes to Michael. Not bad for your first tournament. This flight will be one to watch. The points are getting tighter every tournament.
The D flight winner today is going to have to buy a bigger trophy case. With his third consecutive win in as many tournaments, Larry Aleshire continues to dominate the D flight. His 89 was good enough for a six stroke victory. Larry also comes away with the only skin in D flight. Coming in second with a 95 is Charlie Hoskins. New member Greg Hegstrom shoots a 96 to finish third.
I want to thank everybody for playing in today’s tournament. It was a great time. Our next tournament will be held at Bent Tree Golf Club in Sunbury. Bent Tree has given us a price reduction for this event, so be sure to register as soon as you can to reserve your spot.
