Zavier Neley and Raymond Chamberglain- "C" Flight winners
If asked to describe the recent two-day US Open major tournament for the Columbus, Ohio golfers in one word, that word would be hot. With temperatures in the low to mid 90’s, not much of a breeze and the humidity sitting heavy, the golfers took to the course in quest of that first place US Open trophy. About 30 golfers participated in the two-day event at Eagle Sticks Golf Club in Zanesville, Ohio.
The Championship Flight saw the return of John Fryman after missing out on the Cumberland Trail event. The recent layoff did not stop Fryman from putting together two solid rounds of golf. Fryman fired rounds of 72 and 71 for a total of 143, 3 over par to capture his fourth victory of the season. When asked about the streak, all Fryman had to say was, “You have to take advantage of the hot streaks because a cold streak could hit you at any minute.†Todd Barnes also put together a great scoring weekend with rounds of 75 and 72 for a 147, 7 over par. Barnes took home the second place trophy. Rounding out the top three in the Championship Flight was Troy Boswell with rounds of 76 and 72 for a 148, 8 over par weekend.
The smallest flight of the weekend was the “A†flight with just four golfers fighting it out for first place. Pete Yakimovich was able to pick up his second win of the season with rounds of 76 and 79 for a 155 on the weekend. Jared Minor came in second with rounds of 76 and 81 while John Winters and his rounds of 80 and 78 rounded out the top three.
Dennis Henderson makes it two-in-a-row in the “B†Flight. Dennis came into Eagle Sticks after winning the last event at Cumberland Trail. With rounds of 82 and 79, Dennis was able to hold off hard charging Eric Croker and his rounds of 82 and 81. Matthew Golden rounds out the top three with rounds of 78 and 90.
A first time winner takes home the trophy in the “C†Flight. Raymond Chamberglain put up rounds of 86 and 91 to take home the first place trophy. Zavier Neeley fired a blistering round of 84 on Saturday but was unable to keep the momentum going on Sunday as he put together a round of 95, for a total of 179. Zavier did take home the second place trophy and vowed to be ready for the next event. Scott Wood put together a solid weekend with rounds of 90 and 91 to round out the top three for the “C†Flight.
The story of the day in the “D†Flight was the big move. Keith Weaver came from five back and Gary Poling came from four back to finish tied after 36 holes. Weaver had rounds of 98 and 90 while Poling put together rounds of 97 and 91. On the 37th hole of the tournament Weaver was able to edge out Poling and capture his second victory in a row; both have come in a sudden death playoff. Homer Logan and Michael Kennicott finished tied for third. Both golfers fired rounds of 93 and 97 on the weekend.
The next stop for these golfers will be Chapel Hill on June 22nd. There are plenty of spots still open for any golfer who would like to play in the sixth event of the season.
