The Columbus Golfweek Amateur Tour held its eighth event of the 2011 season today at Cumberland Trail Golf Course. Known for some of the best greens in the state, and a challenging layout, sixty nine golfers set out to gain some major points and climb up the leader board for the season long points race.
Champ flight saw the return of John Fryman today. John has had many accomplishments on the golf course, and is one of the best golfers on the Golfweek Tour. He did not disappoint today shooting an incredible two under 70. This ties his best Golfweek tournament score ever. Taking home the major trophy and Player of the Week honors made for an all around good day. Coming in second place, only three strokes back is points leader Rich Campbell. Rich has finished first or second in every tournament this year in Columbus. Rounding out the top three is Tim Ford with a score of 75.
Due to inclement weather the rest of the flights were reduced to however many holes everybody in the flight completed. That was fourteen holes for A flight. Carl Mollenkopf shot 75 on the day, which would have won the eighteen hole tournament. He was also the winner after fourteen holes. Carl has a very impressive all around game and will be gunning for the top spot by the end of the year. Coming in second is Eric Croker. Eric is another player who will always be at the top of the leader board. Three players tied for third, Brandon Fraley, Alonzo Shavers, and Doug Fleischman. After the scorecard playoff, Doug Fleischman is the winner. With only six tournaments A flight will be one to watch.
Another great turnout in B flight today saw fifteen players compete for our third major and bragging rights to go with it. First year member Rex Reeder played the best he has all year to end up with a three stroke victory. Not too far back is another newcomer this year Brian Boyed. Both of these guys can really play and are starting to compete at every tournament. The story of the day goes to Chris Wurzbach. The par three sixth hole at Cumberland Trail is a very difficult one to say the least. It’s got water on both sides of the green, sand traps in play everywhere, and today had a front left tucked pin that is extremely hard to get close to. Not for Chris. He stepped up, put a good swing on it and carried it just past the pin, spinning it back right into the hole. It was picture perfect. He also took home third place. Congratulations to Chris, and thanks for picking up the tab! If you know the Columbus tour it’s a good thing his ace held up for a $250 super skin.
C flight had another repeat winner at Cumberland. Howard Pavlofsky played his best all year to earn a two stroke victory. His second win of the year being a major puts him right back in the hunt for the season long points race. After taking two double bogeys on hole one and two, he had enough. He finished with 39 on the front and continued the great play on the back side. With four players all two strokes back, a scorecard playoff would determine the tie break. Buddy Mcbride would finish second, and Dave Parish ending up in third place. The next tournament will be crucial with these players starting to bunch up at the top.
D flight has been producing some of the best scores we have ever seen in Columbus, and the participation is at an all time high. Our season long race has Mike Harris, Scott Allen, and Kyle Dowell as the top three. Not surprisingly when the tournament concluded they all had the same exact score. Since a playoff couldn’t be played due to weather, we would go to the scorecard. Mike Harris takes home the crystal, and his second victory in a row. Our next event will be a great test for these players.
Our next tournament is at Northstar Golf Club. The course is in great shape and I hope to see everyone out there. Register online at amateurgolftour.net to reserve your spot.
