John Fryman
By: Keith Weaver, Associate Director Columbus Tour
eGolf Amateur Tour Columbus member, John Fryman, has qualified for the US Public Links Championship! The US Public Links Championship has been around since 1922 when James D. Standish Jr. convinced the USGA to start this championship. The very first Public Links Championship was held at Ottawa Park Course in Toledo, Ohio. That championship was won by Eddie Held of St. Louis.
John Fryman, who played golf for Mount Vernon Nazarene University, has been playing on the eGolf Amateur Tour for the past three years. Each year John plays in more than half of the events on the Columbus Tour to include the National Tour Championship on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. John is one of the most consistent golfers on the tour averaging right around par in every round he plays. Being such a consistent golfer has helped John become a multiple winner each and every year he plays on the tour.
On June 21st, John teed it up at Beavercreek Golf Club hoping to qualify for the US Public Links Championship. This was John’s fifth attempt qualifying. The format was a 36-hole one day qualifier. By the end of the day, John was standing on top as the low man and Medalist for the qualifying round. John fired rounds of 73-71 for a 144 to claim that top spot.
To get John to talk about himself and his golf game is extremely tough. John is one of the most humble and laid back individuals I have ever met. However, after the round was over, John took a few moments and answered some questions about his experience on the day.
Weaver: Going into the day, what score did you have in mind to shoot?
Fryman: A score right around par usually has a good shot at qualifying.
Weaver: What was the most challenging part of the day?
Fryman: We had a few rain delays. So, the stopping and starting was challenging.
Weaver: What did you think about your chances?
Fryman: This was my 5th time trying to qualify and the competition is always good. I putted well and the score worked out well for me.
Weaver: Can you talk about one great shot from the day.
Fryman: I don’t know if I had a best shot. But, for two rounds I made many points and the short game was good.
Weaver: What’s the next step?
Fryman: Head down to North Carolina for the National event
Weaver: What are your plans leading up to the National Event?
Fryman: Going to get a lot of practice time and hopefully a practice round in before the event
Weaver: What are your expectations for the National Event?
Fryman: I just hope to play well for the first two days of stroke play and make it to the match play part.
From all of us at the eGolf Amateur Tour Columbus we wish you the best of luck. Congratulations on the progress so far.
