Great Weekend of Golf

The fourth major of the year was held this weekend. The host courses were Little Turtle Golf Club, and Phoenix Golf Links. Both courses were very demanding, with some of the toughest greens we’ve seen all year on day one, and sustained winds all day on day two. That didn’t stop 25 of the Columbus tours best from showing off their skills.
The Champ flight had the top three in the season long points standings show up to claim #1. Second in points this year, John Fryman knew this major was important. His solid round of 75 on the first day gave him a four stroke lead over Ryan Troup. Never giving up, Ryan comes out on day two, with one of his best rounds of the year (73). Exactly four strokes better than John’s 77. Off to the par 5 number one hole at Phoenix they went. It took John just one birdie, and the victory was his. This win puts him just behind the Champ flight leader Jeff Maier.
A flight saw seven players battle it out this weekend. Most of them closing in on the top spot. The first round leader Rick Smialek played great at Little Turtle, making a lot of pars on a traditionally difficult course. His round of 81 was good enough for a four stroke lead. Knowing anything could happen on day two, the players started fresh. Brad Herpolsheimer came back Sunday firing on all cylinders with the third best round for any flight. His score of 80 put him at a two day total of 165, and another victory. New points leader Eric Croker places second, while Rick Smialek and Hack Fannon tie for the third spot.
The B flight saw Jacob Bridges come away with a much needed victory. Jacob shot a combined score of 186. This tournaments points helped him move into first place overall. With only two tournaments left, every point counts. Second place goes to Devon Ratliff. Congratulations to both golfers.
The biggest flight of the weekend was once again C flight. With many players having a legitimate shot at winning the points race, it was a battle for two days solid. Frank Myers didn’t let the “fastest†greens he’s ever played slow him down from taking the first round lead, and never looking back. His two day score of 175 was good enough for a seven shot victory! Bethany Selan played consistent all weekend, and was rewarded with another great finish. Her second place showing moves her up the points race ladder. Rounding out the top three was Bill Sluka.
Now for the story of the day. One of our most dedicated golfers on tour, made the trip all the way from Pinch, West Virgina. During that long ride to Columbus, I’m sure Wayne Dawson didn’t think that at the end of the day Sunday he would be paying the bar tab for Egolf. That’s right, Wayne recorded the first hole in one in the four years of competition for the Columbus division of Egolf. The par 3 number 6 at Phoenix is known as one of the toughest holes on the course, and that’s without the 15mph wind that was blowing today. It was a perfect end to a great weekend of golf. Congratulations Wayne!
I want to thank all the golfers who participated in the Stand Up To Cancer raffle. It helps out a very good cause. Our next tournament is at Clover Valley Golf Club in Johnstown. Reserve your spot now, and I hope to see everyone out there.
