The Columbus Golfweek Tour held its fifth tournament of the 2011 season today. The two day major was held at Foxfire Golf Club on Saturday, and Players Club on Sunday. With the weather turning out to be picture perfect, 54 players took on two of the most difficult courses in the Central Ohio area.
One of the most impressive streaks we have ever seen in Columbus is still alive in the Champ flight. That streak is held by Rich Campbell. In his first year on tour Rich has won every event he has entered. He did so this weekend with a 71 on day one followed by a 78 on day two. Throwing in four birdies on each round helped him finish off the weekend in style. Coming in second was newcomer Jeff Pontius. Jeff started off day one without luck on his side. After his driver breaking, he had to pull out a solid 83. On day two he had the low round of the day (73). He shows what he’s capable of with fourteen clubs in the bag. Rounding out the top three is Kevin Dick.
One of our larger flights of the weekend was A flight. With eleven players in the field, including the frontrunners to win it all, this was shaping up to be a great test. Long bomber Tyson Rahrig stepped back into the winners circle winning his second major of the year. Going 82-75 was no easy task. He is one of the few players that played better the second day on a very tough course. With Carl Mollenkopf and Eric Croker both totaling 164 for two rounds, a scorecard playoff was in order. It had to go to the #2 handicap hole to determine the winner. Carl’s birdie gave him the second spot and a climb up the points leader board.
The B flight race is getting tighter and tighter every tournament. Only a few tournaments from being halfway through the season, players are fighting for every point. In his second tournament ever, Alonzo Shavers showed that he is a player. Carding an impressive 74 on day one, it was his tournament to lose. Not going as low on day two (81) but enough to win by eight strokes gave Alonzo his first tour victory and the crystal trophy. Coming in second is tour veteran Bill Sluka. Bill’s 80-83 were the result of steady and consistent play all weekend. Shon Hoover and Bob Ubbing both shared third place scores. After the scorecard playoff, the gift card goes to Shon. Congratulations to B flight members on one of their largest fields of the year.
C flight had some familiar faces at the top of the leader board after day one. Jacob Bridges held the first round lead with a great round of 83. Three other players were within three strokes, so it was anybody’s tournament. Dave Parish and Dave Ehret were one stroke back and Kevin Brown only two. Off to the Players Club they went. Matching his score of day one was Dave Parish (84-84). That was enough to secure a three stroke victory over Dave E. and Jacob. The scorecard playoff for second place was determined quickly with Dave E. coming out on top. Overall these are some of the most consistent scores this year in C flight.
Well at first Larry Aleshire had to build a new trophy case for his collection of Golfweek Tour awards in the D flight. Now he has to add a wing on to his house. Five for five on the year so far, has showed why Larry is one of the most consistent golfers of any flight. Coming in second for the third time this year is Mike Harris. Mike is just a few shots away from contending for the top spot each tournament. This should be a close race all year.
I want to thank everyone for participating in the tournament at Foxfire. We had a great time. Our next event is at Crown Hill Golf Club. Check us out online at amateurgolftour.net to register.
