After record setting rainfall in April, it was fitting that the sun came out for the 71 Golfweek Amateur Tour members on the last day of the month. Our first major (Masters) was held at Hickory Hills Golf Club in Grove City. One of the premier private courses in the area, and known as one of the toughest.
In the Champ flight today we had 9 golfers taking on the course. New member Rich Campbell is starting a trend winning his second tournament in a row. Two birdies on the round propelled him to a very impressive round of 74. Josh Bell and Bill Esch both finished the day with great scores of 79. But it was Josh’s birdie on the #1 handicap hole that gave him not only second place but a skin, and super skin.
Out of 16 players in the A flight today there was only one that broke eighty. That player was Tyson Rahrig. His round of 77, with two birdies gave him the victory and the green jacket. Pete Yakimovich, Harold Jackson, and Carl Mollenkopf came in the clubhouse with solid scores of 81. After the scorecard playoff it was Harold Jackson in second, and Carl Mollenkopf taking third.
We had another strong showing in the B flight today with 18 players. Returning for the first time in over a year, Pete Koumas let everyone know that he’s back. With a great round of 82 and a four shot victory, he starts the year off with a win. Bill Sluka and Chris Wurzbach both finish the day with solid 86’s. Scorecard playoff goes to Chris. The points race will be very tight all year in the B flight, so this major was crucial.
The biggest field of the day brought 20 players in the C flight. This flight is one of our most competitive every tournament, and this proved to be no different. Leon Bilderback shows why good golf runs in the family, shooting an excellent round of 84. His birdie on the very tough par five #8 won him his flight skin, and a super skin. Shooting 85, one shot behind was Bill Harrington. Rounding out the top three was Dave Ehret with an 86.
For the second tournament in a row Larry Aleshire takes home the hardware in D flight. Another one shot victory, and the only skin in D flight turned out to be an all around good day of golf for Larry. Only one stroke away for the second tournament in a row is Mike Harris. Can’t wait to see these guys battle it out at our next event.
I want to thank everyone for coming out today. This year has started out great, and that is due to all the Columbus Golfweek Tour members participation. Our next event is at Cooks Creek on May 14th. Be sure to register to reserve your spot.
