The Columbus Golfweek Tour held its thirteenth event today at Riviera Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. On a day where the weather was unseasonably cold and windy, 52 of our die hard members toughed it out. Although the weather was awful the course on the other hand was in great shape, most noticeably the perfect greens.
Champ flight had a returning champion today at Riviera. Jeff Maier makes it two in a row with the best score of any flight all day, shooting 81 with one birdie. That birdie happened to be on the extremely long 465 yd par four eighteenth. Coming in second is season long point leader Rich Campbell, with a respectable 84. Finishing not too far behind in third (87) is another frontrunner in Champ flight, Kyle Crossfield.
It has been almost two seasons since Jared Minor put together a good enough round to win, and today that finally happened. Jared started off strong shooting 37 on the front nine, and barely hung on with a 45 on the back. That 82 gave him a two stroke victory over last week’s winner Kevin Dick. Kevin is getting hot at the right time of year and looks to continue his streak at our next event. Rounding out the top three with an 85 is A flights top player Eric Croker.
Another great turnout in B flight today. Nineteen players set out to gain some much needed points. B flight is one of our most competitive flights and the top guys in the flight all have a legitimate chance to win it overall. After many top three finishes all year, Chris Wurzbach finally takes home the trophy. His 86 was good enough for a one stroke victory over Bill Sluka, and Jeff Spires. Jeff’s par on the hardest hole on the course won the scorecard playoff. I can’t wait to see how this flight turns out this year, it will be very exciting to watch.
Our story of the day was in C flight. After playing in some of the toughest conditions we have ever experienced, three players turned in their scorecards with 91’s. Dave Parish, Jacob Bridges, and Christopher Dearth would need extra holes to determine the winner. Off to the first hole they went. After good drives by all three, it would come down to the short game to crown a champion. That player is Jacob Bridges. His par gave him his second victory in a row and enough points to go into the last event leading C flight. With the top four paired together for our next tournament, it will be a battle all day between these guys.
Greg Hegstrom has stepped his game up in D flight as of late. Finishing second last week at Granville, and earning a one stroke victory today (101) has proved he is one to watch in D flight. Only one stroke behind, Mike Harris and Phil Petitti add some crucial points going into the final major. Another flight to pay attention too, let’s see what they’ve got.
I want to thank everyone for showing up, I really appreciate it. The conditions were very hard to play in and it shows the dedication of the Columbus players to participate in this tour. We only have one event left at Longaberger Golf Club. I can’t think of a better place to host our final "major". Please register as soon as you can at amateurgolftour.net
